I agree with Tim. This was one of my favorite movies in recent times.
The director, Julian Schnabel, is also a much-ballyhooed arteest. His handful of films, compared to his painting, stand up as some of his very best creative work:

I thought it was overrated. Maybe I read too many gushing reviews before viewing.
