  • Fun with Contranyms

Contranyms are words that have two opposing meanings. Without googling anything, whenever you think of one (or more), list it. I love these things. I was talking with my mom the other day when I realized that sanction can mean.

    1. To formally rebuke for breaking a rule
    2. To formally approve an action

    Coolness.

            Also "cleave"

As in "the rock was cleaved in half" (cloven?)
            or, "Cleave unto your wife."

Good one, KL. I think cleave has three past participles: cleaved, cloven, and cleft. I'm not sure if they have to be used to modify certain things when made adjectives, but a cleaved palate doesn't sound right.

"Wow, that woman has some nice clovenage/cleftage," also rings hollow (in many ways).

                  oversight

This one is often the only one left after the others have already left.

I don't have one to contribute, but I gave a paper earlier this year with "Sanctioned Violence" in the title that played on this double meaning.
