    The Fishing Thread

Am I the only one here who loves to sport fish? Flystripper?

Last Sunday I had a guide take my boys and me fishing on the Snohomish River. The Pink Salmon were peaking. We caught more 4-5 poinders than we could count. They fought like hell. Pinks are perfect for a boy's memorable first fish. The Snohomish has to be one of the great urban fisheries in the world. The Silver Salmon run starts soon, and they're expecting a strong one. Silvers are my favorite salmon. The right balance of big (15-20+ pounds), numbers, and fight. All these fish are great eating. I think I'm going with some adults after the Silvers.

I'm just getting back into it after a hiatus. These same guides that took me for the Pinks go for sturgeon in the Columia estuary in June. I've always wanted to hook a sturgeon. In wintertime they do the Steelhead in Western Washington. Steelhead may be the grand daddy of them all, and no, I've never caught one. I think I'll give it a try over the X-mas holidays.

You are obviously not a student of my posts.

That sounds great, SU. You have lots of fabulous options where you live.

I don't fish as much as I would like. I love to fish smaller streams and rivers(Uintah basin esp). There are not as many options around here as when I lived in carbon county.

I don't own a boat, I don't want to haul a boat around, I'm new to the river. I'm not a fool. I'd rather pay for a guide a few times a year than buy a boat and all the equipement, etc. Ultimately it's also cheaper.

I don't get out as much as I'd like, but do make a point of getting up to the Bighorn at least once a year. Monster rainbows and brown trout. We have a couple ponds in our development that have some sort of pan fish in them (small mouth bass maybe) and the kids love going over there and catching a few.

Sometimes I'll go over there in the evening with a few Hamms, take off my shirt, crank up the Skynrd on the truck's radio and pay homage to my Southern ancestry.

The Tick got me into fly fishing about 2 years ago. I havnt picked up my baitcaster since. I dont get out as much as I'd like, but it is a good time. We are taking our fly gear with us to Utah in hopes of some time on the Provo Friday.

I have tried many times to get into fishing (my father and FIL are both avid fishermen) but I just don't find it entertaining. I always find myself wishing I were golfing. I know some people really love it, and that's great. It's just not for me. I'm sure there are plenty of fishermen who would say the same thing about golf.

I went juggin' for catfish over the weekend, on the Tennessee River. Didn't do well, turns out they are on the shad and yellowfin and we were using shrimp and nasty garlic chicken. Trying again next weekend, this time using a trot line. Should be fun.

I work with an avid fisherman and he is also an avid golfer. It can be entertaining to watch him try to figure out which he will do on a weekend, all the while juggling his kitchen passes.

LOL. Pretentious fly fishermen. Whenever I interrogate a "fly fisherman" they admit fly fishing is usually not the most effective means to hook a fish. Also, they rarely actually dry fly fish. We used a lure, a jig; what's the difference between that and a wet fly? Exclusive fly fishing is for pretentious snobs. I was wondering when somebody would do a fly fishing hijack. Persnally, I'd rather catch big fighting fish that are premium table fish than an overrated landlocked trout any day.

Not pretentious. You just can't be unemployed and do it. But no worries...Obama will rescue non Fly Fishers and outfit everyone with a rod and reel.

I use dries all the time. The time of day and the weather dictate what fly you can use. They are great in the early evening when you have a hatch coming off. But you would never use one during the middle of the day when the fish stay down to keep out of the heat.

I like fly fishing because it really is the only conservationist bone I have in my body. I treat the fish with respect and release them back into their habitat. I use barbless hooks to make it as painless as possible. The only reason I would keep a fish is if I wasn't able to revive it.

I also pack garbage out with me when I go. I carry and extra garbage bag and clean up after a typical "bait" fisherman. Salmon egg jars, power bait jars, worm containers, fishing line, beer cans and diapers.

You just wouldn't see any of that with a fly fisherman.

And you are a wine drinker...there is some fly fishing in you somewhere.
