Brilliant puzzle today. Anyone else do the Times puzzle religiously? Today's was the best I've seen in a long time.

No but I wish I could. I love crosswords. I am not too bad at them either. My mom however is amazing at them. I am always in awe of how she completes them.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostBrilliant puzzle today. Anyone else do the Times puzzle religiously? You know how President Hinckley said he doesn't worry about those who pray? The same can be said for men who are self-aware enough to know when there's a life to be lived outside of the world of video games. - Anonymous

Thank you Gidget for not letting me have a zero reply thread. I will remember your kindness always. Are you people seriously telling me that there are no crossword freaks on this board? Yesterday's puzzle turned out to be a rebus and I thought its construction was a thing of beauty. I come to CUF where I'm certain several people had come to the same conclusion and I find I'm the equivalent of some guy dressed as a Romulan roaming a Star Trek convention.

I don't have time for crossword puzzles anymore, save long drives. My wife and I have a book of them in the car, and she reads them and acts as scribe while I lap the miles, and lick the valleys up.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostThank you Gidget for not letting me have a zero reply thread. I will help you out here. I was into them big until I turned 15.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostThank you Gidget for not letting me have a zero reply thread. I'll admit it--I love crossword puzzles. I can't get the NYT crossword though. Last time I faithfully did those were in med school. I'm a Games magazine subscriber and do all the crosswords in there faithfully. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

If you have an iPhone there's a $10 app that gets you the NYT puzzle for a year. That's how I get it.

No iPhone but I'll have to check out if there's one for my phone.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostIf you have an iPhone there's a $10 app that gets you the NYT puzzle for a year. That's how I get it.
I can usually do Mon-Wed crosswords, Thursdays about half the time, but I rarely can finish Friday or weekend ones without help (Google, etc).At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I am good through Thursday and I'm good at Sunday (which imo is just a really big Wednesday/Thurs puzzle). Friday is very tough. I rarely finish without cheating (though I did beat it today!). Saturday just kicks the crap out of me. ER, I'd bet you would do very well with the Sunday puzzle.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostNo iPhone but I'll have to check out if there's one for my phone.

There is a great website where each day's puzzle is broken down by an English Professor who uses the alias Rex Parker. I check it when I'm stumped or if I want his opinion on the puzzle's construction. He's amazing. (You will note that he gives a Relative Difficulty rating. He rates today's puzzle as easy for a Friday which would explain me solving it without cheating. Damn.)Last edited by SteelBlue; 09-11-2009, 12:29 PM.

Wow, Steel, I have newfound respect for you. Not only are you an anatomy textbook, but a crossword wizard. I still remember a Friday puzzle I finished with a friend as one of my crowning achievements in life--I think it was more him than me, though.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostI am good through Thursday and I'm good at Sunday (which imo is just a really big Wednesday/Thurs puzzle). Like I said, the last time I faithfully did them was at the U, where the paper's only redeeming feature was its inclusion of the NYT crossword. I don't think they published on weekends, but it seems like the few weekend puzzles here and there were way too hard.
That website's really cool. Thanks for the link.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

SteelBlue, I didnt see this last week, but I love crossword puzzles. Love them. I am not dedicated to any one puzzle, and I don't do them daily, but I do at least 2 or so a week. I should try to do some NYT puzzles and then see how I stack up with you.....or I can just take the easy, inevitable route and admit defeat right now.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I have often thought that you would be really good with crosswords. You have a facility with words AND a ridiculous knowledge of trivia. I consider the NYT to be the gold standard of puzzles you should give it a try. Also check out the movie "Wordplay", a surprisingly entertaining documentary about 4 contestants in the USCrossword championships with cameos from Jon Stewart, Bill Clinton and many more.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostSteelBlue, I didnt see this last week, but I love crossword puzzles.
