What game did you get them hooked on instead?

No school today. Nieces spent the night. I awaken to an ongoing conversation downstairs:

[6yo niece] How do I pwace a bwock again?
[8yo daughter] You press the other button, (takes controller) like this.

My son is seven and he says it's "stupid and lame", but the kids in my Sunday school class are bonkers over it (They're 9-10).

I've watched it, and it looks totally boring to me. It doesn't look fun like Super Mario or the stuff I grew up on. How do you win? It just looks nonlinear so I don't see the point. It doesn't have particularly good graphics either, so I guess I just don't see the draw.

I think that you have to have some creativity to enjoy it. I grew up playing legos and simcity, so I actually enjoy playing minecraft with my kids. We all have the pocket edition and play together on Sunday mornings or afternoons. It is fun to see the imaginations of my kids at work.

I've been a little surprised my son doesn't like it because he loves building with legos and doing creative stuff like that.

He hasn't asked to play it on the iPad so I certainly haven't worried about it. I just like to try and win the games I play, and it doesn't sound like it's that kind of game, which is fine. To each their own.

The Sunday morning thing reminds me to mention that we've started watching the Star Wars: Rebels series every week before church. That's a pretty fun little series.

Well have you played the Pauline Edition of Donkey Kong that some guy (surnamed Mika) cooked up after his little daughter was crestfallen when she learned she couldn't play as "the princess"? I like Donkey Kong. https://archive.org/details/arcade_pauline

Nintendo is re-releasing the NES. $60, HDMI, comes with 30 games installed. Extra controllers (they are patterned after the original ones) are $10/each.

I saw this. I wonder if they will release other playable cartridges or if this will be a plug-n-play situation. Worth it, either way.

I don't think there are any cartridges, are there? It was my understanding that this was all loaded on the device. They may decide to release more games for download, but I doubt they put out cartridges. Also, I'm betting someone finds a way to root this real quick so that you can add all of the thousands of ROMs that are already out there.

Well- yeah. I guess I meant the ability to add to this in general. Those games take up so little room they could curate and release the occasional package of games for sale and make a killing. While they did get the essentials, I can think of about 20 classics right off the bat that they didn't include.

Very cool and even cooler that it's a mini-version. I might splurge and get this although I'm sure MJ will object. It would be even cooler if they found a way for yuo to have to cover teh console with your shirt and blow into it to get it working every time you start it up.
