  • Christmas 2020: Yule Log or Dumpster Fire?

We have a lot of Christmas threads, but I thought this year called for its own. Among other things, I’m interested in any unusual gift ideas, virtual get-togethers, or observations the pandemic may engender. We’ll be celebrating alone for the first time ever but have been going full bore on interior and exterior house decorating to help offset the mood of solitary confinement.

One day brightener was this Twitter thread of unusual nativity sets. My favorite may be the following:

Oh, and in keeping with the thread title, this ornament will grace our tree:

    Merry Christmas, CS!

That 2020 ornament is awesome, in a sad way.

My wife's brother who lives in Utah and my wife's mom (california) are coming to our house for christmas.

My BIL has already had COVID and my MIL was worried about visiting, so she took and antibody test because she was sure she has had covid already (like in January/februar). It came back positive for antibodies, so she's ready to come.

Not sure how accurate those antibody tests are....

Thanks for the nativity ideas. I especially like the blocks with the names on them. I may have to add one of those to our collection.

My Xmas had been a pretty boring dumpster fire pretty much since Thanksgiving. Dumpster fire is probably too strong of a word since it hasn't really been bad but it's really been nothing quite like previous years. I've been really busy at work trying to get a lot of stuff done before year end close, COVID is raging in our area and I had a scare with it resulting in me quarantining in the garage for 1.5 days, and the weather has been unpredicatable enough to cause annoyance...plus my teenage daughters are driving me crazy.

Anyway, for FHE last night we sat as a family and watched the Light the World Social Sing production put on by the church (https://fb.watch/2oZTwQexYx/), which was a bunch of musical numbers from church members (mostly Youtube famous people) and the Xmas spirit finally hit me. It was refreshing to finally feel the love of Xmas and I think it helped that I got to talk to my son by myself for 30 minutes since MJ had an errand to run. It was nice to sit and chat with him about whatever as he spends a lot of his time in his apartment on his mission.

            Merry Xmas CS!!!

I think I have an idea of why the spirit took so long to hit you. Sad.

My wife is insane, but in a good way. This is the 7th or 8th Christmas she's been a ward RS President (different wards) and she's felt bad she can't put on a big RS Christmas Social of some type. She's very talented on the sewing/embroidery/quilting front, and makes outstanding fudge and caramels. So she made a gift bag for each of the >50 women in the ward that includes a Christmas message, lots of the aforesaid candy, and a kitchen towel embroidered with the recipient's last name. She delivered the last of them tonight. I think our EQ President will wish us a Merry Christmas during our monthly meeting Sunday, but that's it.

Christmas this year is pretty much like all the others in the NWC house. Three of four kids were back at home already due to COVID one way or another. My second daughter from Bozeman did come home. We reasoned that central Oregon and Bozeman both have a relatively low COVID incidence right now, so we only felt mildly guilty about bringing her home. We’ll be doing the usual safe activities, walks and maybe snowshoeing. And being lazy inside.

                  Merry Christmas Eve everyone.

Christmas 2020: Yule Log or Dumpster Fire?

A new family moved just down the street not long ago. We got a little neighbor gift of cookies from them. So to return the favor my wife asks me to put together a bag of cookies from the various homemade treats we have and take it to them.

I happen to be wearing a BYU sweater at the time. We also have a stash of navy blue Santa hats since red is evil, so I grab one of those and head down the street. Just before knocking on the door I notice that they have a license plate frame saying “Alumnus University of Central Florida.”

                    Thankfully they weren’t home.

Have a sciatic flare up from lugging presents down the stairs and heartburn from the cookies left for Santa. Kids will be out of their minds excited in the morning. Almost as fun as being a kid yourself.

                      Merry Christmas all.

Marry Christmas to all, and to all a good morning. It's been fun being able to Zoom in on some of our kids' early morning Christmas revelries.
