I don't know if this should be here in in the Critics Corner, but we have tickets to go and listen to Ken Burns tonight. I guess he is touring in support of his new series on PBS.
Has anyone heard him speak?

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."
I've never heard him speak, but I think it would be an evening well spent to listen to him. Give us a report tomorrow on how it was.

He came to BYU last year and spoke. It was great. You should definitely go.

I think so. He is speaking at a local High School. My wife got us tickets through her work (local library).

This is my report.
He was very interesting. He spoke for about an hour and 20 minutes and took questions for another 30. He also showed a 10 minute clip from the first episode of the National Park series.
It was mainly on the National Parks series that starts next week.
He told some personal stuff about his first visit to Yosemite and how awed he was by it. He also talked about his first visit to a national park, Shenandoah Valley, with his father in 1959. It was a very personal story. He commented that he had forgotten all about it until he visited Yosemite for the first time in 2003. The question was never asked, but I got the distinct impression that Yosemite is his favorite national park.
He talked about Capitol Reef and said when he showed some people the footage they had shot there they thought it was CGI
He also talked about his philosophy about making historical documentaries. He said that he wants to use a bottom up approach to history rather that the usual top down.
He said the the National Parks project was trying to how the history of the parks and the park service and not just be a travalouge or a tour guide. He said it goes not just into the geological history, but the human history. He tries to show that they weren't just discovered by the Europeans, but there were people living in them.
He was asked what his next project was and he said he always has several going, but there is one on the Prohibition that is in the editing stage and he is working on one about the 2 Roosevelts, Teddy and Franklin.
All in all it was worth the 2 hours

Don't know, but it looks like it. I just wish I had that much hair at 56

Does the National Parks documentary have 9 episodes covering 1810 through 1910 and one episode covering 1910 to the present?
You are a one-trick pony.

I may be a one-trick pony, but I know the history of jazz better than Ken Burns.
I admittedly haven't watched anything else that he has done. Maybe he does a great job with everything else, but with the job he did with jazz I just cannot see trusting him on any subject.

Yeah. You have mentioned that a time or two.

Taking this question seriously ( I know, a big risk ), he didn't say. From the way he talked it sounded like the episodes would be divided by geography than time, but like I said he really didn't say.

A good rule of thumb is to not take any question that I have about Ken Burns seriously. As a fan of jazz, and particularly of fan of the jazz that Ken Burns denigrated in his unfortunately titled documentary Jazz, I think he is a no talent hack. My question was alluding to the fact that he had 9 episodes in his jazz documentary leading up to 1961 and then one episode on 1961 to the present. You got to love that the point of the final episode was the jazz is dead, unless it is in the style of Wynton Marsalis (who oddly enough was the lead consultant and expert for the documentary).
