Online school sucks

Just got done with 3 weeks of online for a 1st 4th and 7th grader. Lot's of issues week one, but smooth since.

Today, my 1st and 4th graders got to go back to school and they were so excited. Had to wear mask all day and bring their laptop/tablets and basically do online school while inside of the school. Only 5 kids per class and my girls were luck to be picked. My 7th grader is still at home, but he's doing just fine.

My kids are all on campus this morning for the first day of school. I’m hoping they can avoid a shut down of on campus learning.

Our kid has been doing online learning for the last couple of weeks but will be on campus tomorrow and will be going every other school day. He said that the online classroom sucks and is looking forward to being there in person tomorrow. The first day of online class the school's internet crashed but fortunately they had a backup.

So far, day 2 is not going much better than day 1.

All three kids are still having some issues, in spite of trying to leave the computers on last night.

The youngest's laptop is still indicating no internet. Not sure how they can run the updates when they still haven't fixed whatever filtering issue is preventing internet connectivity. I tried moving her to the home desktop computer, only to find that it's currently running a bios-level utility to repair the D drive, which I didn't ask it to do. ETA for completion of that utility: 3.5 hours. I set her up on the desktop that I've been using to work from home, and that seems to be working fine.

The middle child's computer seemed to be working fine, but wasn't connecting to the meetings. While typing the last sentence, I heard her finally get admitted to one of her classes.

The oldest has been able to connect to all his classes, but has had issues with not being able to open other apps.

Edit: just got the youngest's computer going properly, for now.

And just like that, the youngest's laptop is no longer connecting. Thankfully, the D drive utility is done on the home desktop, so I've moved her there for now.

Earlier, when realizing that the middle child's laptop wasn't working like I thought it was, I tersely said "Bastards" while thinking about the district's technology team. My 12-year-old asked "Isn't that a swear word?" And then she seemed very amused that I can be so calm when dealing with misbehaving children and so upset with a malfunctioning computer.

My wife and kids have reminded me that when I'm working on something and get upset I call it a "piece of junk!" Last week I helped my boy replace several emmissions components on his car. Both he and my wife were mildly surprised I hadn't said that once during the repair.

And after starting in-person school there are already three positive cases among students... I am expecting to be infected before the end of the week.

hooray for online school. My kids just came and got me because there is water dripping from the kitchen cabinets. My guess is that it is the swamp cooler line, but I really am not sure what could be leaking up in the attic. Had they not been here it would have been at least 3 more hours before the leak was discovered and that is only because I am working from home. Otherwise it could have been disastrous.

Yeah, I'm not counting on those laptops working until at least next week. My daughters are all stuck to their own electronic devices.

Why crawl up there when your kids, who are likely smaller and lighter, would fit more easily. Hand one of them a phone and they can facetime back what they are seeing, almost like a drain snake with a camera on it.

No positive cases yet at our schools but I'm sure it's coming. There are 10 kids physically on campus in my youngest's class with about as many online at hte same time. Seems to be working well for everyone so far.

It doesn't surprise me though that government run entities are struggling to make the necessary changes to do online school. Government sucks at pretty much everything it does and a mass roll out of online schooling was destined to fail at first. They will get it right just in time for everyone to go back on campus.

Recently received an email from the district:

Our filtering vendor has been coordinating with our technical team this morning and the vendor noticed the way we connect to our firewall may be the issue when it comes to connectivity for some of our devices. We are going to reconfigure one of our filtering appliances to attempt to isolate the issue.

I could use to borrow one of BP's kids to run a CAT-6 wire in the attic that I need. Besides being a small space it is too damn hot up there too. I wonder if he rents them out.
