  • I just reserved a new Ford Bronco

The news has recently noted that Ford will be coming out with a new Bronco that strongly resembles the first one that they started selling in 1965. Except this one is supposed to be better off road than the Jeep.

So I watched a couple of videos about them, stopped by the local Ford dealer for more information, and found out that right now they are only taking reservations. Sometime in the future - the salesman at the dealer said in about eight months - you'll be able to actually place an order. So you can reserve one with a refundable deposit of $100 and many months later you'll have to commit to whether you actually want it or not. The guy at the dealer indicated that it will likely be 15 months before anybody actually sees one.

There is a special First Edition version that basically has every single option that they offer and they are supposed to only build 3500 of them. Those were all reserved in less than 48 hours. I'm wondering how many of those will end up on eBay.

I only committed to the base version and only want one option package - Sasquatch - to make it better off road. It's about half as much as the Limited Edition.

Supposedly I have until next spring to either convince myself that I really want one or to ask for my deposit back. This would be one way to get my wife up in the hills with me, since she refuses to ride on a motorcycle. Or maybe not. We'll see.

I put a $100 deposit down last year on a KTM 790R back when nobody had any for sale. Ended up buying that in December, but I was much more committed to that purchase and traded in the bigger 1090R that I had owned for a year and a half.

Time will tell if I get into four-wheeling off road in the future.

I really like the way they look and would get one...except there's really no point in Houston. It's not like we have rocks or mountains to take it over. Plus, I'm not sure it would be a good commuting car.

I can't see commuting long distances in one. And who knows what kind of mileage it will get. The base engine is supposed to be over 300 hp, and the optional engine over 400. It looks like Ford is putting turbo motors in everything from here on.

Cool SRN - I've been looking at Rubicon's for a couple of months - and was anticipating the Bronco. I've seen all those promotional video's three times. Sasquatch is the package you want. Would you go 10 speed automatic or the seven speed manual? Basic has the four cylinder matched with the stick. That's they way to go. This whole Covid and Rioting is making me rethink my retirement years. Portland may be too crazy if it really hits the fan, and I'm thinking of bugging out to my ancestral home of La Grande. I like a property that abuts a million acres of BLM with over 400 miles of dirt roads at the 5 to 6 thousand foot level. I could spend what's left of my life in the mountains chasing dirt roads or snowmobile paths. On the other hand - I'd like to buy a distressed golf course and fix it up. Can't do both. I've got a couple of more years to figure it out.

It's like you read my mind. Except for the golf alternative. Golf is dying. If you want to give your money away, that's fine, but don't buy a distressed course and expect and ROI at all. But the rest of it is my thinking exactly.

I'll always choose a manual transmission for myself, because I like to have more control over things like that. But if the wife wants to drive it, she claims to have forgotten how to work a manual transmission, even though that's all we had for many years. I'm not sure you can get an automatic with the smaller engine, and even if you can, you need a higher level options package to get one.

I still have the option of bailing out and not buying one - right now I'm just exploring the possibility.

I have been thinking of trading in my old Rubicon for a new one. I was planning on getting the new diesel option. Then they recently teased a 392 hemi v-8 and confirmed a plug-in hybrid (~30 miles electric range - probably 90% of our jeep driving). Then the Bronco came out! Sheesh, I will never be able to decide.

The larger engine only has an automatic transmission option. Manual is only available on the smaller engine.

Why sell the old Rubicon? What are you looking for on a new one that the old one doesn't give you? is the diesel that much better? Curious because I am thinking of buying a wrangler soon-ish.

Good question. My current one is a 2007. Lift kit, steel bumpers, winch, 35-inch tires, etc. It is a 2-door and I would like a 4-door. Also, I am hoping to get something that will pull my fishing boat (19-ft aluminum, ~3000 lbs). Need a longer wheel-base for that and way more torque. The engine on mine is pretty gutless. Also, things like incline meter, apple car play, etc. would be nice. Then again, I might just get another SUV and keep my jeep. I don't really want a truck.

do you have 4 cyl or the I6 on your '07? It sounds like a pretty nice set up, tbh.

FWIW, I am not a huge fan of Apple Carplay and adding a stereo that will connect via CP and adding an incline meter is not a big deal. Wheel base and torque for pulling are obv an issue.

The Duramax diesel in my Colorado ZR2 has a good amount of torque. It is just a four cylinder but can pull our 24’ fiberglass boat just fine. I read that Chevy is not going put a duramax in the next refresh of the Colorado. What a shame.
