  • Load your burdens into the official wheelbarrow thread

My wife didn't like the way our wheelbarrow looked, so she gave it away. I found out about it this weekend when I wanted to move some dirt.

So I'm in the market for a wheelbarrow and they have all these new-fangled features available - poly tray, dual tires, total control handles, etc.

What have you guys used and what features are really that helpful? Anything that seemed like it would help but was actually detrimental?

I had a hand-me-down wheelbarrow from my grandpa. The tire would go flat after a while, and I've got splinters from the handles before. I gave it away to my neighbors a couple years ago and bought a new one from Home Depot. The tire will never go flat and the handles are covered in thick rubber.

I've had my wheelbarrow for about 17 years. It's rusted out to the point that I can see through it in a couple places so it's probably time to replace it the next time I need to mix some cement. I partially favor the one-wheeled barrows for outside work since when I'm doing some big projects it's nice to have a narrow point of contact on the ground to maneuver around stuff. But the two-wheeled barrows are more stable and I've used thme a lot when mucking out homes. They require less strength to keep balanced and are more stable on the ground as well when loading.

For my next one, I'll probably get a two-wheeled barrow with a poly tray and some rubber grips on the handles (I don't know what total control handles are).

I have a poly tray wheelbarrow that's probably 10 years old, and the tray is cracking around the rivets that hold it to the handles. Also, the tire wouldn't hold air. It's pretty much impossible to take the tire off the wheel to put a new innertube in (if you can find one), but I found an entire replacement tire at Harbor Freight. I had to trim the plastic guides around the axle to fit my wheelbarrow, but it works.

I have an old plastic bin wheelbarrow that is 28 years old. Darn thing just won't wear out on me. I replaced the wheel once.

My last wheelbarrow lasted over 20 years and still hadn't completely fallen apart. I had to pump up the tire before using it, but it stayed good for a few hours. I always wore gloves when using it, but I don't think the wooden handles were a source of splinters. I sold one at a garage sale when I moved from SLC to California. I later realized that I should have kept it.

I probably need one now, but I've been able to get by okay without one. I don't really have a good place to store something like that.

Oh man, can you imagine how light their wheelbarrows are? I wonder where the kick points are though.
