Honestly, a good female friend with whom you have no romatic attachments can be your greatest fashion ally. Granted, she needs to have a sense of fashion to be of assistance. She can help you find styles/fabrics that work for you. I was the go-to fashion consultant for a number of my male friends when I was single.

I'm not much one for shorts myself, but some of the currently popular slim-fitting European-style flat-front trousers look pulled together and come in a variety of lightweight fabrics. These will also transition well into cooler temperatures.

I echo that jean shorts should be avoided like bird flu. Going for a patterened, tailored short is in right now. A friend of mine wore white seersucker shorts with a orange plaid pattern that were very cool.

The TLC show "What Not to Wear" occasionally features men to be made-over, and Clinton (one of the hosts), dresses impeccably if somewhat flamboyantly at times.

The most comfortable shorts I have is a pair of linen shorts I bought at Banana Republic. They make me look like I belong in a boner pill commercial walking along a Caribbean beach with my middle-aged, but still saucy wife. But I don't care, they keep everything nice and cool.

As a sidenote, sometimes I get the urge to buy a pair of bathtubs and put them in my backyard. I also want to prop up a tire and try to throw baseballs through it.

Should there really be any question about jean shorts? The same can be said for carpenter pants/shorts and even cargo shorts. My wife bought me some patterned shorts a couple summers ago, I don't really feel comfortable in them anymore. It's all about the plain shorts right now.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Denim shorts are awesome. Never stop wearing them.

Mpfunk exaggerates. Mpfunk possesses a number of cargo-style khaki shorts, and I dislike those. I'm fine with his newer acquistions.

As a sidenote, after living in Europe, I stopped wearing shorts altogether. I realized they weren't flattering on me (and most women, IMO), and I can achieve similar cooling effects with skirts.

Agreed. But they are currently trendy. That is, flat-front trousers are trendy and available.

Let's not confuse the issue, though. Pleated suit pants and pleated shorts are not the same caliber of offense. The former is a class-B misdemeanor, the latter, a first-degree felony.

EDIT: My mistake--Mrs. Funky wasn't talking about shorts, so the issues aren't really being confused. My point stands, however.

It is understandable. Cowboys don't wear shorts.

Flat-front trousers have been in for a decade. Aside from the trousers for my suits that have a single pleat in them that goes into the crease on the front of the trousers, I haven't otherwise owned a pair of pleated trousers for the past ten years.

Simply put, flaring out the pants around a guy's hips, thighs and crotch is not really in fashion right now.

Boylen, my advice is to wear what you want to wear. If others have a problem with it, it's their problem.

Better to be a slave to what society dictates you can and cannot wear. Safer that way.
