    Crying at Work

I have never cried at work. At least never in front of anyone. In my first job out of school, however, within the period of 1 year I had three different people who worked for me come into my office and start bawling. And this was not because they had just learned that their dog had just died. I have not had anyone cry since. This may be because in my first job I managed about 25 low-paid people (most made less than $10 an hour).

#1. The first was a somewhat odd woman who was very good at what she did, but also somewhat unbalanced. I didn't give her a promotion, and she had a half hour mad-cry in my office.

#2 was an 18 year old girl who I really liked (no not in that way) but who made bad choices in her life sometimes. She ended up getting pregnant; and I'm not sure she even knew who the father was. About six months into the pregnancy, she comes into my office, and starts crying because she thinks I don't approve of her.

#3 is my favorite, and was definitely the most uncomfortable. I had this big, weightlifter who worked for me. He comes into my office one day and asks if he can talk. It went something like this. "I just wanted to talk to you because (sniff) . . because (bigger sniff) . . . sometimes I feel (long pause) (bigger sniff) that you (sniffs turn into full our bawling) don't like me at all". This was kind of hard, because I didn't really like him that much, but I didn't think admitting it would help matters. I had suspected before that he took steroids, and this confrontation did nothing to ease my suspicions.

So did I get very unlucky in the first year I worked, or have I been very lucky in the last 14 years to not have any repeats of this?

I have 13 women who work for me, so to see someone crying over "she said..." or "she did..." is a weekly occurance. Thankfully 99% of goes through my office manager who is much more empathetic than I am.

When people cry at work over something other than the death of a human being with whom they had an actual personal relationship, I laugh (to myself).

Most of the tears I see in academia are when childless people's dogs die (or go missing). I try my best to feign sympathy, but my reaction is about the same way I would react if their car had been stolen, or they had lost their wallet.

So you never want to be a bishop or in management. Nothing like setting your goals high.

I worked with a girl who would get flustered and tear up anytime someone disagreed with her or even want to discuss various options to what she had presented. It was very odd...people in the meetings would be like..."uh, it's not that big a deal, certainly not worth crying over."

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Sheesh, talking about hanging one over the plate.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Ever had someone threaten to kill you Clark? I will take crying over that any day.

I figure I get knocked around no matter what... I might as well lob some softballs out there every once in a while. It's not like my self esteem is riding on anything anyone here says.

I think I would take crying too. I was somewhat careful in my interactions with Mr. Muscles after that, since I didn't want my situation turning into yours.

Lingo in my life I've seen many people who have said they would never want to be the boss or in church leadership but deep down they want it bad and are trying to convince themselves it would be okay. I hope that someday you can believe it so it won't hurt so bad.

I have cried at work before. It inevitably involves three nights of no more than two hours worth of sleep. I usually just close the door to my office, let 'er rip for 10 minutes, and then go back to work.

That happens a lot less now that I am in Texas and not NYC.

RC Viking, I don't psychoanalyze you. Don't tell me what I really feel.

about 3 years ago, We had an employee who was a giant POS. My super in charge of him was going to let him go, but it was right before christmas and was pretty hard for him to do. He was a little intimidated by the guy so he asked if I would accompany him on this as I am above average in the size department. I obliged.

The man was not happy to hear the news, as one could understand, and gave the super and I both very long, uncomfortably long, and very firm handshakes staring us dead in the eye. I felt very uneasy about that hand shake and the evil that I felt from his glare.

Three months later, I was perusing the www. and found he had been arrested in the St. George area having killed a fellow.
