It should not be surprising that as a college professor, waup thinks everyone should go to gollege.

Nor is it surprising that as an employer, I find college (not education) to be largely a waste of money and time.

But maybe he is right that our different views have a lot to do with our life experiences. But I'm guessing our work experience is more of a key to finding the root of the difference and not which side of Appalachia we grew up on.

I'm more want to agree with Will:

You dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a fuckin’ education you coulda' got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the Public Library.

Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

So the lazy poly in you is the one spending most of his free time posting on the internet?

          Makes sense.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's where and how yall grew up. I was raised in Appalachia by Appalachian parents, and I wasn't Mormon, so my views are, unsurprisingly, nowhere near where most people on this board are. I do not view an education in the scope of how to make a better worker (though the skills I teach--especially understanding grammar--will make people better writers). I worry about the individual and their education. The Appalachian in me bristles at the elitism and almost fascism of saying that college isn't for everyone while in the same breath talking about how to make someone a better worker. College certainly isn't for everyone, at 18, or 22, or 25. But, any mind that's not retarded by some physical or emotional trauma or defect can learn something useful (to them) from studying things

I thought a lot more like this before I spent four years as a poverty lawyer. That helped me realize the gravity of the situation in that I could help solve legal problems, but the larger problem of being self supporting economically was only available after years of work at education for which most were poorly prepared. To me, it is more pragmatic to get skills to people and hopefully move them to the point of economic self sufficiency, than to continue the status quo, which serves a limited number very well, and most not at all.
