One of the more disturbing stats I've seen in awhile.

I was reading the BYU alumni magazine (or is just called BYU Magazine?) at my parents' place and they did a profile of the incoming BYU Freshman class for the 2008-2009 school year.

I then saw a depressing/disturbing stat. 83% of incoming BYU Freshmen last year were involved with the performing arts in high school.

I'm hoping the question was expansive and simply asked whether they played a musical instrument or was otherwise involved with the performing arts. I took piano lessons for five years as a kid and would answer that question in the affirmative.

Otherwise, BYU has devolved into a school with a bunch of band, dance and drama geeks. I went to the bookstore and walked around campus, and quite simply the looks-quotient hasn't improved since I completed my studies at BYU and it was quite mediocre when I was there. I had a phone conversation with my brother the other night who attended BYU between 1986 and 1993. BYU was a different place in 1986 and the place changed dramatically the years he was there. For some reason unknown, BYU became a significantly more difficult place to get into in 1993 in comparison to 1986. And the difficulty to admission has only increased over the last 16 years.

Both my brother and I are pretty unsure whether we'll be encouraging our kids to attend BYU.

If there were a sliding scale of looks and academic achievement, BYU should be Harvard and it most certainly is not.

There are a lot of schools that are significantly better at both than BYU. Prime example: University of Texas.

You're right, I forgot that just because a school's entrance requirements are low doesn't mean they won't get some brilliant students and/or faculty.

On average I bet BYU's students are smarter than Texas'.

I would say SC and UCLA are doing quite well in the "hot coed-to-academic reputation" ratio.

I was told a couple of years ago by someone I consider reliable, that couples in Utah County are called to teach some students at BYU how to interact socially. Was he pulling my leg?
