    Do you own a netbook?

My wife's laptop is about to be sacrificed to the gods, so it is time to start shopping around for a replacement that the kids can destroy when she isn't looking.

I am giving serious consideration to a netbook. In fact, one my home latop dies, I will also get one. I don't really use my computer for much beyond the basics...some word processing, internet, listening to music, watching porn, and sending email.

My neighbors just purchased a couple of Lenovo IdeaPads and they swear by them. With the 6-cell battery, they said they can work away for up to 2 days without a re-charge. I goofed around on the keyboard a bit and thought the action on the keys was pretty nice....not that cheap feeling you get from some lower-end laptops. The screen was vibrant, as well. And the thing weighed less than 3 pounds.

I know there are loads of brands out there. Does anyone have any recs based on their own experiences with these stripped down laptops?

I bought my wife a netbook for Christmas last year. Since she mostly communicates with her family and friends in the Philippines online, it was needed. At the time Davey was 4 months old and she was moving around a lot. Needing to carry him and a laptop was difficult. So it made a lot of pratical sense. I myself don't like hers because the keyboard is so small, but she absolutely loves it.

I also just gave out 15 netbooks as performance incentives last month. That caused a lot of excitement and drove performance with the younger employees.

Is that a notebook or is it perforated all over (which I guess could make it a net)?

It's a notebook. The pages are a really nice shade of yellow.

It's funny, because I was looking at these things last weekend at Costco and Best Buy. Costco carries an HP and ACER. Consumer Reports says the ACER is the better deal and I concur after my cursory look at them. The ACER keyboard seemed to be a bit bigger and sturdy and the advertised battery time was longer, I believe it only cost about $10 than the HP. I think it was either $330 or $340. For what I do, a netbook would make more sense than a big, expensive laptop.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I first saw them at Costco as well. Not sure if the brand, but HP or ACER sounds about right.

We were at my neighbors on Sunday evening hanging out and visiting with the kids and I started messing around with the netbook. After about 10 minuntes, I was hooked. Why the heck do i tote around a 5 pound laptop?

I find that I rarely even use the CD drive anymore. Everything is flash drive now and music is direct download from the web. Having a CD drive adds about a pound or more to the laptop and it isn't even necessary, at least not for me.

They even come with built-in webcams and cameras for Skype use.

I really think I am going to jump in and buy one. Maybe I will look into the ACER if you think it is worthwhile.

For my wife I got her the HP. For my employees we got the Acer from Costco. The Acer is a better machine. The HP is great, but in the 8 months I think the economy has driven the popularity which has driven some nice improvements. I really liked the Acer machine and it was $350 I think at Costco. I'll get the specs for you.

Cool. thank you, I'd appreciate it.

Also, my neighbor (he is an Oracle programmer, so he is into this tech stuff) suggested that I wait a month or so. He explained that while most netbooks ship with XP, the newer ones will start loading Windows 7 (is that what it is called?). I am fine with XP, but if waiting a few weeks will get me the newest OS, I might do so. I am already used to Vista's new format, so the jump to 7 won't be a big deal for me. Did your netbooks come with XP?

My concern with this would be whether the netbooks would be powerful enough to run the new Windows OS. Vista was a nightmare for awhile, especially for less powerful systems. I also think the low price on netbooks may be partially due to the inclusion of XP which would have to be pretty cheap at this point. Of course, your Oracle programmer is infinitely more informed on this than I am.

XP. I gave out the netbooks as 2nd prizes and I gave out 5 full laptops as grand prizes. We bought the laptops at Best Buy and they came with a free Widows 7 upgrade. I didn't ask about it from Costco. So you might want to get it from a retail and get the free upgrade. That allows you to choose which OS you want.
