    Expressions I love

My ward here in Tokyo is full of expatriates, most of whom are well-paid, well-traveled, well-versed, confident, humorous, and -- above-all -- great people. They're all well-connected, it seems. Ask any of them about any trip you want to take, any city you want to go to, anything you need done, and they've "got" a guy or a hotel or a restaurant or whatever. Here's a real conversation that took place last Monday:

Tim: "Have you guys been to Afuri in Ebisu? Amazing ramen."
Pete: "I've got a ramen place in Shibuya."
Josh: "I've got one in Shibuya, too. Where's yours?"
Pete: "I'll have to take you there some time. Best ramen in town."

    Here's another one:

Tim: "I'm going to Beijing and I'm gonna have some cheap shorts made while I'm there."
Pete: "I've got a guy in Beijing that'll make you anything you want for pennies. I had him make me a topcoat last time I was there."

(For the record, CUF, I recognize that cheap Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese prices are fantastic, but cheap prices = cheap clothing. I've got a guy in Singapore that does my suits. Top quality, Savile Row-trained. See, I can play the game, too!)

    Here's another:

    Tim: "Cam, who's your helper?"
    Cam: "I've got Eileen."
Tim: "Oh, I've got Elena. Who's got Rowena?"
    Cam: "The Ellises."

Anyway, I love it when people say they've "got" something... some restaurant or tailor or helper or mechanic or something. It's a great expression!

      You filthy old man!

(That's not me adding an expression I love to the list... I'm actually calling you a filthy old man.)

Hey, you are the one with the filthy mind. That is what I yell when I hit a good drive.
