    Amos

I've got a little one on the way and my wife and I have been discussing baby names. I really want to name the little bugger Amos if it is a boy. It was my great Grandfather's name. He was a great man, a veteran of both World Wars and was Mayor of Parowan (this is a shout out to all you hicks down in Cedar, you should appreciate the magnitude of this). Of course we'd have to Mormon the name up a bit and spell it something like Ayhmus or Aimiss.

My wife isn't sold on this, so I thought I'd run it by you guys to see what you think and see if you have any suggestions. Keep in mind my wife's cousin named her baby Journey Navoo, so apparently just about anything will fly with her side of the family.

I think naming your kid Anus is a great idea. Nobody will ever tease him about his name!

Note to self...run future baby names through the DDD-tease-o-meter before assigning.

        Damn!

I knew I could count on you guys to alert me to something like this. So do you think that's a dealbreaker?

Just don't name him Aswipee and you should be fine. And thanks for the Iron County shout out as well.

I say go for it. Amos is a great old-fashioned name. The teasing will always be worse in your imagination than it will be in reality.

We named our boy Asa. We received dire warnings from the teasing sensitive that this name would result in all kinds of torment since it is basically one letter away from being 'ass.' It doesn't happen. The 'boy named Sue' phenomenon is not as bad as the song would lead you to believe. Go for Amos. Great name.

As long as you go into it with your eyes open, then go with the name you like most. But there is no way around multiple Anus references at one point or another. Overall, I don't think it should impede you from naming your boy.

By the way, the tease-o-meter is a real phenomenon. Elementary school kids can be cruel! I remember within a few days of the Challenger explosion, there were space shuttle jokes all over school. This was way before internet, blogs, etc. Who thinks of these jokes so quickly? One thing elementary school kids take seriously, it is their cruel teasing.

I think Amos ranks high on the "retro cool name" scale.

Unfortunately, it is off the charts on the tease-o-meter.

ps Fortunately, children in your son's peer group will not know of Famous Anus cookies.

Amos is a solid name. If you go with this, do not Mormonize it. Spell it as is should be spelled.

Another factor to consider is how searchable the name is. Say the boy grows up and starts a small business a more unique name gets more hits and more business. On the other hand you may prefer the added anonymity that comes with a common name.

That's good to know. I honestly was worried about it.

DDD's comment on the name 'Amos' goes right up there with his feelings about quilts. REPENT!

I have known a couple of Amoses. Nobody called them anus. Although one of them was an asshole.

                          It is a good name.

FWIW "Amos Moses" is my third favorite Jerry Reed song after "She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)" and "East Bound and Down".
