    Big events and little children

Who here remembers the moon landing? Due to a memory wipe at the veil, I have no recollection of the incident that occurred nine years prior to my sojourn here on earth. I'd love to read some of the old-timers recollections of the event.

One of the earliest events I remember was the Challenger crash. Our third grade class was interrupted by the intercom announcing the disaster. We were then shuttled into a commons room where we watched the footage on TV. I still remember my teacher, Mrs. Houser, gasping as the explosion was shown.

A couple years prior I remember gathering with the entire family watching the '84 election returns in our tv room. My mom was cursing Dan Rather. IIRC, she thought he was acting glum because Reagan won.

I didn't realize I was that much older than you Y-oh. I was born a year after the moon landing so I missed that too. My first big memory is my mom calling me into the living room when I was 8 years old to watch the news about blacks getting the priesthood. The next big one was Reagan being shot. I was in 5th grade and they called us in from recess early. My teacher was crying and I think we watched news coverage the rest of the school day though I could be wrong about that. Another big one was John Lennon being shot. I had recently purchased the single "Wheels Go Round" on 45, it was one of the first records I ever bought (I was 10), and I had become a huge fan. I was at my violin teacher's home waiting for my lesson to begin when they broke in with the news. I remember all the adults making a really big deal out of it and me thinking "wow, this is really serious."

The space shuttle was a huge deal but I was already a sophomore in HS.

I remember when Michael Jackson died. That was huge.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I was in second grade when the Challenger exploded. I remember watching the news coverage in our class, but not really understanding the gravity of it all.

Do you think if there was a major story like that today they'd let the kids watch? I tend to think they wouldn't.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I definitely remember the moon landing. Hard to describe how incredible it was to watch. After the landing I walked outside. It was night and there was a full moon (or nearly full). I remember looking up and marveling at the fact that there were humans there at that very moment.

I remember most of the Apollo missions leading up to the landing as well. And I recall the drama surrounding Apollo 13.

My dad had called me into the room to watch the Apollo 11 landing, then took me outside, pointed to the moon and told me that that is where the astronauts were that we had just watched on tv. Being 5, it didn't really sink in, but I do remember it happening.

Like Lebowski, I remember watching Walter Cronkite reporting about the war in Vietnam and vaguely remember a cameraman following some troops through the jungle there and seeing them with their weapons.

I was in 6th grade and remember watching the news about the evacuation of Americans and South Vietnamese from Saigon after it fell.

What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

                    6th grade in Roosevelt, Ut.

Mr. Robb came running into our classroom and turned the TV on (he wasn't our teacher) He and our teacher just stood there with tears streaming down their face as they were talking about the Space Shuttle exploding.

I don't remember Mt. St. Helens though. Don't know why.

I lived in Belgium as a small boy and we did not have a television. But my mother took me to a party where they were watching the inauguration of Ronald Reagan. My parents loved him so much I thought he was Mormon. I guess the crappy first experience may be why I am a Democrat to this day.

4th grade when the challenger blew up. What a horrible feeling.

The fall of the Berlin Wall. I was an avid news watcher from my youngest age, and I remember them chisiling away at the wall with pick axes and there being tons of people around climbing all over the wall. The graffiti on the wall really stood out to me, too.

After that, Desert Storm. I remember being on a family vacation and stopping at some middle of nowhere restaurant. They had a Saddam Hussein dart board up. I thought that was interesting.

One of my first big event memories is when the Teton Dam broke and flooded Rexburg. I was only 4, but I remember watching it on TV. My parents were wigging.

The first real world memory for me was the American hostages in Iran.
