We've not noticed any issues in our neighborhood. In fact, it's been a long time since we've had problems.

I noticed a CenturyLink van parked on the street on Monday. A guy got out of the van and went into the neighbor's back yard, without any tools in hand. Came back out, jumped in the van and drove off. Seemed like a useful visit.

We switched from Comcast to Frontier Fiber this past year. Last week our internet went out - we called for an ETA and was told it was on our end and not theirs. I checked and checked found nothing - checked in the garage, and my wife had hooked up the Christmas lights to the same outlet as the incoming Frontier box, and it had popped the circuit.

At least she didn't have me killed...

My wife called yesterday afternoon because, to paraphrase, the house was going crazy - the TV wouldn't turn on, there was beeping happening in multiple rooms, etc. After she described what was going on, I explained that the power had gone out and the beeping was coming from the UPS's notifying her to shut off the connected devices.

The power was back on within an hour but the internet was not. CenturyLink had an outage. Eventually they sent out a notice that they didn't expect it to be fixed until 10 am today.

When I arrived home, the family was watching a movie (Meet the Robinsons). They had reverted to an old technology called DVD. After getting the kids to bed, I turned on the TV, switched to the antenna input, and watched a little bit of a Magnum PI rerun before switching to a PBS show about water rights in the Colorado River basin and then another about Madagascar.

The kids couldn't really do any homework yesterday, but they'll be fine.

The internet seems to be back up and running again now, though I just got a notice from CenturyLink explaining that they're planning to have the issue fixed by 4 pm.

So we have been considering relocating to CenturyLink country. From what I have read CenturyLink is a nightmare. On top that it seems CenturyLink wants to still sell off their consumer business for scrap to the highest bidder. Apparently they have no bidders yet.

It seems like they might keep some of the residential (fiber) business, however:

"Quantum Fiber is an important new brand within Lumen with a focus on superior fiber connectivity and a fully enabled digital customer experience," Dugan said. "Quantum Fiber serves residential and small business customers, and Lumen focuses on enterprise, government and global businesses."


In 2019, CenturyLink expanded its fiber network to reach an estimated 300,000 additional homes and small businesses with its gigabit service. CenturyLink's consumer fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) projects provide symmetrical speeds of up to 940 Mbps. The faster speeds were enabled in parts of Boulder, Colo., Spokane, Wash., and Tucson, Ariz. last year.

The area we are thinking about relocating to does have CenturyLink (Quantum?) fiber. So maybe they are just going to spin out the copper crap business?

You better be double sure that the area has CenturyLink fiber. They market heavily in locales where they have a few nodes but many nodes don't have it. The only way to know for sure is to put the address in on CenturyLink's site.

For example, CenturyLink says they have fiber in South Jordan, but my node definitely doesn't have it.

If all you've got is copper, then you better pray that you have Comcast in the area. If you don't have Comcast in the area then you're stuck with CenturyLink's DSL (up to 40MB!!) or even worse stuff like wireless or satellite.

I do have a question about the CTL fiber routers... Can these be swapped out for, say, an Ubiquiti Edgerouter or something running pfSense?

Yes, you'll just need to set it to pppoe authentication with the assigned info, then vlan 201 on the wan port.
