    Women attorney's

Mrs Funk's post got me rethinking something I was wondering a couple of nights ago while watching Megan Kelly and Lis Wiel on the O'Reilly show.

Seems to me a lot of female atty's are attractive. I would think that is just a function of the gals they put on TV, but a buddy of mine's wife is a prosecutor, high profile, and she is very attractive.

Now I know they all don't look like the gals who have appeared on law and order, but do female lawyers tend to be more attractive than say a pool of Secretaries, nurses or auto mechanics and why.

Ok, so as to preclude my "no comment" from being misinterpreted, I'll just say that I think female attorneys are representative of the professional female demographic. There are some very attractive ones, there are some very homely ones, and most fall somewhere in between. Generally speaking, I do not think they are more or less attractive than women of another profession or position.

I don't know about most female attorneys, but when I was on a jury last year, the defense attorney was female. She was not hot. She also dressed so frumpy that is was verging on distracting. I think she was going to a professional look, but she failed miserably. Also she wouldn't speak up so the judge and court recorder lady kept having to ask her what she had just said. She did not exude confidence.

Probably right and TV is TV. My friends wife is just a coincedence. I have another friend who is in the construction business and his wife stays at home, was a soccer player and is attractive. However, come to think of it she is thinking about becoming a lawyer when they get a new Bishop.

I echo Donut's comments with the caveat that if Nancy Hamberlein ever obtains a law degree during her off time from handling students' transcripts (or whatever she does), then I'd have to say that, yes, female attorneys are more attractive on average than women in other professions.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Female attorneys are called to walk a fine line in many, many respects. An attractive woman who shows any skin may not be taken seriously and called a bimbo. If she covers up too much, she may be considered stodgy. If she's aggressive, then she's a bitch... not aggressive enough, she has no backbone or confidence.

In answer to your question, I agree with Donuthole. I don't think the profession per se attracts attractive women. Bigger profile firms may have a particular "look" they are going for, but can apply for both men and women (e.g. one firm I interviewed at, EVERYBODY was thin, tan, and well-dressed).

Interesting post. I think back to a mentor of mine at my old firm in NYC. She was two years senior to me and quite attractive.

When client meetings would roll around, especially when they involved other cultures, she would always show up in a very power pantsuit. When I asked why, the reason was because clients wouldn't take her serious otherwise.

Another female associate with whom I worked told me stories of clients coming to her hotel room expecting a little bit extra for their billable hour. I think a rate hike would be in order for that kind of service, even at my rates. Again, these were non-US clients.

There is also a strip-club culture at some firms, including my old one. That one can make for a hostile workplace. I have also known of sexual harassment that bordered on abuse.

I have nothing bad to say about my current firm, which is very professional.

It's not as bad as it used to be, but it ain't a picnic either.

I really think the sexual harassment laws that came along are a good thing. I have seen a couple of cases where the gal really took advantage of a situation and to do so just because the firm wanted to avoid even the appearance of a problem.

On the other hand, these laws make one think first before even saying confusing things. I look back to the days when I was a real estate broker and hired women. I didn't think anything of it, but they might have when I offered the hot, single ones the 40% payout plan or the 60% payout plan.

This is the part that I will agree with.

However, it does seem that that number of attractive women in my law school class is higher than the number of attractive women I meet in the legal profession...
