    First time at cruising

I've never been on a cruise, but Faith's parents are paying our way (their idea of a family reunions) so we are going.

In fifteen minutes we will be on the road to Vegas (we were planning on going camping in SoUtah afterward, which is why we aren't flying out of LA).

In five hours we will be sitting poolside at some hotel in Vegas.

In 24 hours we will be waking up at some hotel in Florida.

In 48 hours I will be cruising.

In 10 days I will again have internet access (is it really a vacation without access to CUF?).

Books I am bringing with me:

A Supposedly Fun Thing I Will Never do Again, by David Foster Wallace
This is the book containing DFW's essay on the Cruise Ship industry, which he hated. I thought it would be fun to read this essay while actually cruising.

The Posthuman Dada Guide: tzara and lenin play chess, by Andrei Codrescu

This is the Codrescu of NPR fame, with the great Eastern European accent, and tons of pithy things to say about New Orleans and art. The book is really pretty sweet so far, but I haven't found the time to really crank through it. A cruise should help.

    Satanic Verses, by Salman Rushdie
This is the book that I probably won't read, but I've been carrying it around for a while as a sort of penance for something, probably not reading it years ago.

I will see you all in a week or so (or sooner, if I can muster the fortitude to post from my iPhone (unlikely, but I may browse for another day or two)).

    xoxo

    Nice thread title.

    Have a great trip.

I went on a cruise with my family when I was in 6th grade. It was not a family friendly cruise, but was being paid for by my dad's employer, so we didn't really have much choice. Needless to say, I "accidentally" walked through the tanning deck about two hundred times that week.

We did something similar for my parents 50th Anniversary. We did the Alaskan cruise. It was enjoyable. I'm not sure I would make it a habit. Have a nice time.

The first time I was on a cruise was my honeymoon. It turned out that a gay group from Florida had booked half the cruise. It made for a fun experience and a moment that I will never forget. My wife and I had a great time and met some cool people.

Matching banana hammocks and a pool with a slide was entertainment in it's own.

If you have any sort of issues with moving sickness, start taking dramamine the moment you get on board, or better yet see the ship Doctor and see if he will prescribe you the Scopalamine patch.

We went on a cruise once, and I spent 70% of the time lying still in bed trying not to puke.

                      Sounds fun Robin.

                      Two things:

                      1) Keep your clothes on in public

                      2) Watch out for pirates
                      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

You have a great reading choice there (the DFW), a so-so reading choice (the Rushdie) and one I can't comment on because I have neither read it nor read the New York Review of Books review of it.

Honestly, I think that DFW's essays are his best writing. A Supposedly Fun Thing I Will Never Do Again isn't my favorite compilation (that's not to say I don't love it), Consider the Lobster holds that spot. The title essay of A Supposedly Fun Thing will probably make you look at your accompanying passengers with disdain or perhaps pity; that's my guess. It's a great read, though.

As far as Rushdie goes, his type of writing (historical fantasy or historical mysticism) is not really my cup of tea. I read the thing to see what the whole fuss was about with the fatwa and such and didn't really find it a big deal. Perhaps some people just can't take any insult or criticism to their religion. I'm glad they don't frequent this board.

For me, the first cruise was loads of fun and I thought I was a lifetime convert to cruising. The second cruise, not so much. I think the novelty wears off. You get sick of the fact that nearly all of your interactions with other cultures (a main reason for travelling, IMO) occur with old retired people on the boat and heavily sanitized "local" expeditions. We even tried to do all of our stuff through local groups instead of the boat, but when you take over the town with 2000 other loud obnoxious Americans, it's just not that authentic.

But have fun! The first was one great! Lots of not awful food, and surprisingly good entertainment (all depending on your expectations...). Very relaxing vacation.
