On Being Famous

From time to time when a celebrity dies or an athlete gets in trouble with the law I wonder if those individuals feel that the fame is worth all of the other stuff.

There's a great line in Fiddler on the Roof where Teveye is told that money can't buy happiness to which he replies, "May God smite me with it, and let me decide for myself." (or something to that effect).

Now, I know that having money and being famous don't always go hand in hand, but as my wealthy student ward bishop once told me, "When you have money you trade one set of problems for another set of problems."

This has all lead me to wonder if the individual memebrs greater CUF group at large would want to be famous.

I've thought a lot about it as I've considered certain paths in my life that could've led me to fame...or at least more fame if everything fell into place. I even consider the prospect of writing a book and what impact that would have on me if it took off.

So, I suppose the question I would post is, would you want to be famous? Do you think you could handle it?

No way would I want to be famous. I see absolutely no upside to that, and huge downside.

If tons of money came with the fame, and the fame and money didn't cause me to lose my core values, then the answer would be yes.

Certainly fame and money won't end a confrontation with problems. However, as someone has said, rich people and poor people have problems. Rich people just arrive at those problems in better style.

Then you'd agree, no? I'm with you--nothing good comes with fame. However, the set of "problems" that come with wealth are much smaller than the set of problems that come with poverty. Ergo--full of crap.

I wouldn't mind fame if it was the kind where you go into a restaurant and people say "hey that's UtahDan" and may say hello but let you be. Sort of like most NFL players in their home town would be recognized by fans and appreciated but not mobbed.

I wouldn't ever want to be able to give up going to a movie with my family, taking a vacation where other people are, going to the grocery store. That kind of fame would be too high of a price. Being a famous author would be a good way to be famous too. Lots of money and basically no one knows your face.

Trust me, it is difficult. I just take all of the good that also comes with all of the bad. It has made me stronger but it aint easy being famous.

I tell you what, just handling the CUF celebrity is hard enough. I can't imagine how you manage on the grand scale with your seemingly effortless grace and class. May I just say that you're truly an inspiration.
