    Help Choosing a Subwoofer

So, I'm going to teach a class called AAS 399 Reggae, Rastafari, and Robert Nesta Marley next Spring semester. Our Dean has authorized me to use my professional development money to buy a subwoofer for use in class, because reggae without bass is a why-bother?

I know about car audio....I used to have two ten-inch JBL subs in a custom-box powered by 2 channels of my AudioGods 4-channel 1000w amp until some child of god stole it from my car in Provo.

When it comes to portable and powered sub woofers, I am completely ignorant. Does anyone have any recommendations. I can spend $400 (including shipping). Any help would be really appreciated. I need the sub to THUMP loud enough for a 28 x 18' classroom with 20-25 people in it will feel the bass in their souls.

Look for Bose or Klipsch, you will never go wrong with either of those.
Let's get on with the gettin' on....

I have Def-Tech, but those are in-home subs. I suppose you can easily take them to class with you. Cinema subs are not the same as audio subs for music.

        I second the Bose suggestion.

Would anyone know if an Onkyo receiver says it's "MP3 compatible" does that mean, usually, that you can direct-connect your MP3 player to the receiver?

Probably, but all receivers are mp3 compatible in the sense that you can use a mini-jack male to RCA male cable like the following to connect the mp3 player and receiver:

If anyone is looking for a subwoofer, there's a pretty good deal on the SVS SB12-NSD on Amazon. They're closing out the model. It used to be priced at $650, but is now at $399. Mine just arrived a few days ago. Huge upgrade from my Polk.

You got the cherry color? How well did it do? How much was it? Still using it for classes?

Got the cherry, it was $249.50, 8 years ago. Still using it, at home now. I think I'd get something I could more easily adjust if I could go back. It's a little wonky using it with the Onkyo receiver I got, since it has an onboard amp.
