  • Is there such a thing as a good financial advisor?

Honest question. Everybody I've met so far in life who has referred to themselves as a financial advisor has really just been a salesperson of one financial product or another. Is there actually a profession out there where people really do take a look at your finances and make the best decisions on your behalf or are we all really just forever personally responsible for gaining our own education about everything related to personal finances and just going it alone?

Does everyone here do it all themselves or does anybody trust some other person/organization with all their investment capital?

I always make sure my FA has a current temple recommend. Being honest in all their dealings is important to me, and makes me feel safe and secure.

Just pay your tithing. Everything will work out.

Nothing like asking a sincere question without already having your mind made up.

Trust no one. Everyone is out to take advantage of you.

I'm very skeptical of this industry.

You left out the part about letting your Sirius radio subscription expire and "buy and hold".

In order to invest, one has to first save. After one has accumulated some savings, invest in low-fee index mutual funds. The best way of doing this is through an employer sponsored 401-K plan.

Fiduciary financial advisers are great. So are old ones who used to have perfect avatars.

Apologies to certain country club members of the board, but less than 1 in 5 money managers beat the market average returns. That means you get the privilege of paying an advisor a fee or percentage of a return for a 1 in 5 chance that they might do better than a low fee index fund.
