Town I grew up in had a few businesses until 40,s and 50,s when many moved out and it was pretty much farms in town. Had a handful of churches too. Some community churhes. There have been home based mechanics here, there is an accountant that does some work out if his home, excavated too.
However besides farms only buildings bar, convenience store only open during daytime hours, church, school and bar. Protestant and Catholic Church goers go to neighboring town for church.
Some towns don,t have at least a High School as there was a wave of consolidation in the 50's and 60's. We always had ours. Outgrew building and had funds for new building, however less than 10 miles away construction project on another chapel so were sent there. So in Ward and when Bob was Presiding Bishop he came to our Stake Conference. Had Spanish Branch so got permission for building. Built and town grew, half a dozen new families moved in around time of building, now we have two wards in town, some of next town comes over now.
School which survived several consolidation attempts, decent size, many a out of district come. Dropped football, in 70's, introduced soccer, state allowed co ops and some went 8 miles to play. Some parents said no to going there. Enrollment grew and football came back to our school. Success recently, with a few semi final appearances, won state in 49 and 52, basketball for most part successful, this Saturday will celebrate Silver anniversary of State championship by winning another one. Fire department will escort Bus back to town.
So some things are constant in rural Idaho. Towns off highways of course have stores, and motels as they get traffic, some towns however that don,t get much traffic don,t have many businesses. We almost lost store when owner retired but farmer bought it, and hires people to mange it. Don,t know if that gives him much profit.
There is one constant though in any Idaho town, most cases n LDS church. And wht town that is remote no gets little traffic does not have a bar? We always have had the bar regardless of what else we didn,t have including Church. Any towns in rural Idaho particularly southern and eastern without an lds church, and without a bar? We didn,t have a church, for awhile. But as long as we have the town, will always have a bar.
