  • The Viral Math/Logic Problem from Singapore

I didn't see this posted anywhere, but I assume some of you have seen this.

At first, the whole thing was cryptic to me, and the English is little off. But once I applied the same logic skills that I employ to deduce that JL is more concerned with being part of a scientific mean girl circlejerk rather than actually being right, I was able to solve the problem in a couple minutes.

Post your answer to the problem below and how you figured it out.

I found an explanation by a mathematician on the BBC website, and it lined up with what I deduced.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I saw this thing posted, but the part that says "Cheryl then tells Albert and Bernard separately the month and the day of her birthday respectively" was clipped out. Needless to say, that is pretty crucial information, and without that it was pretty nonsensical. With that information, it is essentially a low-level analytical reasoning LSAT question.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

At the risk of failing a low-level LSAT question, I'll go with June 17.

Edit: what kind of friend doesn't just tell you their birthday. Seriously, I'd be done being friends with Cheryl if she pulled this crap on me. Screw you! I don't care when your birthday is!
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

All right, I'll bite with the explanation.
Albert knows that Bernard doesn't know, i.e., the day is not enough information to know the actual birthday. So the month Albert was told does not have a unique day - July or August.
This piece of information tells Bernard the proper month, so he must have been told a date that is not shared by July and August, but is shared by May or June - 15, 16, or 17.
So if this information is sufficient to tell Albert what the birthday is, he must have been told the month with only one of these three days.
            July 16.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
