  • Turkey Bowl

Any Turkey Bowlers out there? I've played in a Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning for probably 20 straight years (including the mission) although it's evolved somewhat over the years. Back in my teenage years and through most of my 20s I played full on tackle football with family and friends. Lately I've been organizing the ward Turkey Bowl and with my increasing age and the plethora of athletic young folk I've resigned the Turkey Bowl to flag football. 5 years ago I bought a bunch of flags similar to the ones we used at BYU intramurals, but this year I took it a step further and bought these bad boys:

Now I just need to find some BYU Y oval decals to put on them.

I also made the transition to flag football, but much earlier than you. I was done with tackle in my early 20s. But I also purchased the intramural-style flags for use in whatever turkey bowl I organize. I refuse to play touch football when asked. I had a long streak going as well, but I'll be in KC this Thursday and my nephews really want to play soccer with me so maybe we'll do a Turkey Cup. Blasphemous, I know.

Nice dedication! I've played maybe 6 out of the last 10 years. I wear my Crowton-era BYU stuff (gifted, not purchased!!!) so as to keep the choice stuff in pristine condition.

There was nothing more fun than playing in a good tackle football game on Thanksgiving morning when I was young and skinny. Now that I'm fat and old, I'll stick to watching football and cooking turkeys on Thanksgiving. I haven't played in about 8 years.

not playing. The last time I played my little BIL broke his wrist. While we were in the ER waiting, a kid that was suicidal and sobbing tried to sprint out of the ER and into the street so my other BIL had to tackle him and we both basically sat on him until doctors could get the situation under control. Later that evening we were tubing at Tibble Fork and i stepped through the ice and wound up almost waist deep in the water.

            not playing anymore.

              Gave that up years ago.

Wouldn't mind tackle, but it won't happen. Thrilled to play even if it is flag.

You people that still play tackle, how old are you? I'm 37 and I think I could really hurt myself in a full contact tackle game now. I stay pretty active and try to keep in shape so I've either gone soft or scared.

I broke my collarbone about 7 years ago playing full tackle. I drove myself to the hospital. It never really hurt, but I went into shock when they told me they couldn't do anything until the next Monday. It was tenting, and I wanted them to reduce it somehow. Luckily an ortho doc came by, and agreed to do surgery the next morning. i was back at work Monday with a plate and 9 screws in my right shoulder.

It's been basketball or running on Thanksgiving morning ever since.

It helps that my Ward has a couple big Samoans and a dude that played linebacker in college. I'm not gonna try tackling either of them with my 154 lbs of skin and bone. Thankfully they prefer flag football as well as in sure they've put enough people in the ER from ward pickup football and basketball.

A definite must for a ward turkey bowl are practice jerseys. There's nothing worse than having 6 people run routes and you have no idea who is on your team. I bought jerseys the same time I bought the flags.

This year we are playing at 8am. Past years we've waited until 9am and missed out on getting the nice field at the middle school. This year we'll get the nice field. Now we just need to break into the press box and get someone to announce the game over the mic.

I sustained an injury a few years ago playing tackle Turkey Bowl with a group of cops. I don't do that anymore.
