My son is almost 13, in 7th grade and really into skateboarding. He's started hanging out with some older kids through skateboarding. I'm OK with the 8th grade Mormon kid he's been skating with, and the 9th grader in our neighborhood he sometimes skates with. BUT he's also been skating with a 19-year-old kid in our neighborhood who goes to community college, recently got fired from Best Buy, and is always vaping. I'm feeling a little crazy about this. Is skateboarding really this great equalizer that makes it totally normal for a college student to hang out with a middle schooler? Am I overreacting? What do you think?

We've got longboards and skateboards at our house. But my son prefers to skate. And I'm wondering the best way to approach it. He goes off and skates in the neighborhood and ends up hanging out with this 19-year-old. I think it is mostly a skating thing. Although, once I came home and the 19-year-old was playing Xbox at our house with my son and a high school kid down the street. I had assumed he was in the same class as the high school kid but no. He's in his second year at the community college.What's to explain?
