Then why are you posting here?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I haven't benefited directly by being connected to someone, but I do like linkedin as reference point in learning about an individual who I am going to be doing business with, kind of like an online resume about the individual.

Because I am curious how other people are using linkedin.com. I get several connect requests per day, so it seems to be quite popular but I don't understand the benefit. Maybe I am missing something.

For sure, I've used it for job hunting and stalking employees at the future employer. Since there are usually 3 or less degrees of separation of most people I'd care about, I can get a lot of good information on people. I've had a few introductions, too, thanks to knowing I know someone connected to the target party.

This reminds me of the humblebrag that I got from Parrot Head's 4 year old daughter at the pool yesterday:

"Ugh. I got really sunburned when we went to Hawaii"

And yes, I am bragging about spending Labor Day at the pool with Parrot Head's family.

As for LinkedIn, I have not seen huge benefit, but I did get at least a small one recently. I had to run down a boss from 10 years ago for a job reference a couple of weeks back. He has changed jobs a couple of times since then, the email address I had for him was no longer working, and he was no longer updating his blog. Fortunately, I was able to get in touch with him pretty easily with LinkedIn.

Also, it is always fun to see who has been checking out my profile, and in the "People you may know" section I always see a few CSers.

the picture for my linkedIn profile is of a cryovac brisket packer under my Xmas tree. That is about how seriously I connect linkedin with my professional success.

Viewing what people have been endorsed for is super helpful. How else am I supposed to gauge their level of competency?

Besides that, I do get a lot of recruiters mailing me on there. That is probably because they are super impressed that I was a Cubmaster.

Seriously though, I think I've had one interview that was initiated on my linkedIn. It wasn't a job I was seriously considering. It was more prep-work for later interviews.

I only accept LinkedIn requests from people that I have/had a close professional working relationship with. I decline all LinkedIn requests from ward members, friends, neighbors, recruiters, etc. that I haven't worked with professionally. Thus, my LinkedIn profile is purely for professional networking. This has given me the following benefits:

                            1. Because my profile accurately reflects my work skills and history, it functions effectively as a legitimate online resume. This allows recruiters to see who I am and contact me about legitimate positions that I may be interested in and actually have the chops to fill. I haven't gotten into any serious discussions with any recruiters yet about a position but I've given some of them some thought.
                            2. Because my network isn't populated with lots of goober ward members and housewives and people I haven't ever worked with, if I'm trying to stalk reach out to a specific person on LinkedIn the connection information is much more legitimate/valuable. In other words, when I'm trying to find out information about a candidate I'm interviewing, if I can see that the candidate is connected to someone I've legitimately worked with in the past I can get a better read on that candidate's skills and find out information on that candidate.

                            My pet peeves about LI:

                            * Candidates that want to add me to LI immediately after I interview them for a position. Sorry dude, but I don't even add people at my company unless I've worked closely with them. Just because I interviewed you for a job doesn't mean I'm going to add you to my LI connections.
                            * Ward members, especially housewives, that want to add me on LI. Sorry ward-member housewife who masquerades as a "Marketing Consultant" on LI, I'm not adding you. My favorite was an old dude in my ward that listed his job as "Independent Farmer". Nope, not adding you.
                            * Recruiters that want to add me to LI just because they sent me some info about a position they have open. Sure, I'll look at your position but it doesn't mean I want to be LI buddies with you.

Bottom line is that LI is most beneficial as a professional networking tool when you keep it focused on professional connections.

Every once in a while I get a request from someone I know, so I go on there and accept it. But not before I have to resent my password since I have forgotten it. I believe this has happened at least twice.

Other than mindless stalking, LI has been useless to me.

Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."
