Short brim baseball hats: Yea or Nay?

I have a friend who is a big White Sox fan and his 40th birthday is coming up. He has quite a baseball hat collection and I'm considering getting him the following hat, but as one who knows nothing about hat style, I'm a little ambivalent and would appreciate any thoughts.

For those too lazy to click a link, this is what it looks like. It's a replica of the cap the 1917 White Sox wore during the world series.

Would you wear this? Perhaps more important, what would you think of someone who did? Is this the equivalent of wearing a fedora? I'm particularly interested in hearing what MarkGrace and DDD have to say about this style of hat.

I assume there are some people who could pull it off. If I wore it, I am certain I would look like I was wearing a baby beanie.

Of course, the worst thing about it is that it's a White Sox hat.

I can totally see you rocking this hat, you'd look like a modern Chick Gandil, or if you're lucky enough Joe Tinker.

I know. It's painful just thinking about forking out money for it, even for a good friend.

He's a Field of Dreams convert to baseball, so I thought a cool hat from that era would be good for him. What to do? I suppose I could always get him a 1908 Cubbies hat.

I like function over form. The whole purpose of the ball cap is to support the bill as it shades the eyes. A small bill is counterintuitive to the design of the cap in the first place, thus rendering it a gimmick. I'm not a gimmick guy.

Four stitch caps are for umpires wearing a mask. Six stitch minimum for regular caps. Eight is preferable.

Pilgrim, my honest take on that hat:

if your friend is a collector then this hat would probably be a cool gift and a nice edition to his current stash. Hat collectors, like sneaker collectors, usually don't wear all of their items, they simply store them in pristine condition.

if the goal is to give him something to wear around town, I would probably struggle with recommending it. In my mind there is a big difference between the retro chic of old team logos and colorways and just wearing something that looks old. That hat looks less throwback and more part of a museum collection. Actually when I first saw it my immediate thought was the Simpsons....either Abe Simpson offering to play catch with Homer or the classic Monty Burns trying to signal for a bunt

                          Fitter. Happier. More Productive.
