Anyone else ever wondered about this?

I haven't, but I seem to remember the distinction being discussed here or another message board.

In a somewhat related note, I sent someone the flip-off emoticon in a text message at church Sunday and watched him pass the phone to his right and left to see if anyone knew what it meant. Maybe Shakey's corrupted me, but I thought it was fairly universally understood.
