Texas: looking for Advice for a friend

I have a family (Single mother) who I home teach and she just finished Optometry school at tOSU and has several job offers in Texas (And 1 Dayton). She is trying to figure out the cost of living in Texas and what her taxes will be. She is looking at Laredo, Texas as one of the locations.

For those who live in Texas, any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated. I know she is concerned about what she can afford and if it is even the best option. As a singly parent of 2 teenager this crossroad in life is a tough one. I know Laredo is not her first option to go but it gave the best pay. But she is still looking but most of the offers are coming from Texas.

You can BM your information if it is to personal to post, or just post here.

    Thanks for all your help!!

She has an offer from Dayton? Why even consider others?

I used to live in Laredo. I can't say anything regarding cost of living, but I can say that in school my name was "gringo" because I was the only white kid. Laredo is not really in Texas at all, culturally. It was also the murder capital of the US when I was there, although I think that might have settled down a bit since then.

Whenever anyone asks me a question about anything, I throw my hands up, look them in the eyes and say, "Hey Sherlock, ever hear of the internet? Google? Bing? Quit wasting my time." I then walk away happy that I could point them in a direction to get their questions answered.

Unfortunately, the only thing I know about Laredo is that cowboy ballad Marty Robbins sang and that my mom made me listen to as a kid.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

                Oh, but that IS relevant.

Doesn't the song say something about the cowboy meeting a Mexican girl? And didn't we just hear that most of the people there fit that demographic? Who knew listening to Marty Robbins would be so informative?
