Time to fire this baby up, what with Black Friday around the corner and all. Post your deals, gift ideas, goodie tray complaints, and general holiday anecdotes here.

Kicking things off is the announcement from Target that Black Friday is actually now Black Thursday, starting at 9PM on Thanksgiving Day. Wal Mart will be open at 8PM.

    http://money.cnn.com/2012/11/12/news...iving-opening/

Not only are stores opening earlier, but they're coming up with different sales to keep shoppers at their stores longer, according to Brad Wilson, editor in chief of BlackFriday2012.com. For example, Target will have some specials that won't start until 4 a.m. on Black Friday, including a Samsung 50" LED HDTV for $699, a Canon A3400 Camera Bundle for $89.99, Fisher-Price Doodlepro Classic for $10, Leapfrog Explorer Software for $15 and a $10 gift card for shoppers who spend $50 or more on clothing.

Wal-Mart is adding another twist to its Black Friday sales, guaranteeing that everyone in its stores between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thanksgiving night will receive one of the three big deals: an Apple iPad2 and a $75 Wal-Mart gift card, for $399.99, an LG Blu-Ray player for $38, or a 32-inch Emerson HD TV for $138.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

We went fairly big last year with Leap Pad/Leapsters for each of the kids, iPad for dad, DSLR for mom, and an XB360/Kinect for the family.

I think we're going minimalist this year by following the WNWR plan for each person:

      One thing you want
      One thing you need
      One thing to wear
      One thing to read
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

My Christmas list changed on November 6, 12 PM PST to this:
          Aristides: gun
          Soccermom: gun
          Children: guns, ammo, gun safe

OK, so not really. But we are buying some guns for Christmas. That is what Aristides would like.

slickguns.com is a good place to start. online gun sales is a pain in california, though.

Yeah, as long as it takes to buy a gun in this state, we may get our Christmas in February.

Sorry, DDD. I hope I didn't steal some Christmas cheer posting about guns.

I am also excited about a cookie swap that I am attending hosted by a professional chef. He has very specific rules, like nobody can bring basic chocolate chip cookies or no bakes, cookies must be presented in a creative manner, etc. This should be the best cookie swap ever!

My 11 year old son and I actually came up with an idea that is too late to do this year, but we are working on it for next year--a holiday fun run for Charity in our little town. All proceeds will go to a local children's hospital (Stanford probably). I hope we can make it enticing for runners all around. I'm thinking a 5K /maybe 10K. Just have to work out the logistics on road closures, figure out how to do timing devices without a huge expense, etc. I have formed a committee and with a year to plan, we should be able to make it a great success. My 11 year old was a patient at Stanford for 4 days and it really got to him seeing all the children who live there long term. He has never forgotten how miserable it was for him for his short time there and really feels bad for kids who have to stay long term.

I'll again be avoiding Black Friday and Thursday night.

I bought the plush reversibles that Babs posted about. All my boys want are Xbox games and I think I want to get them something a little more significant.

I can't find the talk because it seems that on LDS.org you can't go past 2000 for the Christmas Devotional, but I remember a talk James Faust gave about wanting a building toy so badly for Christmas, but his parents gave him a silver ring instead. That talk always made me want to try and create a mix of gifts that will last with gifts that will be enjoyed and forgotten.

The only thing on my Christmas list is what I ask for pretty much every year: a nice dinner with the Mrs. Last two years we've gone to The Book Bindery, so I guess we'll probably stick with that out of tradition.

The Mrs. will likely be receiving another pair of shoes valued somewhere north of the entirety of my wardrobe.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I once went out on Black Friday. I'll never go again.

MJ has finished her shopping for me and the kids. Presents are already wrapped and ready to go, although they are hidden in the attic. She is smart to get it done early as there are typically better prices and deals the two months leading up to black Friday as there are during the holiday season. There was even a WSJ article on this. I guess only very specific items (few in number) are actually screaming deals on Black Friday while the rest of the items are usually priced higher than in August/September.

So how many people will skip Thanksgiving dinner entirely to wait outside in a Wal-mart or Target parking lot? That's messed up.

                              Yes. Yes it is.

Some of them will be there because they don't care about Thanksgiving. Others will feel like their hand is forced because they don't want to mis out on the deals so they will start.

Within 5 years, Thanksgiving will be nothing more than the start to the shopping season and stores will open at midnight on Thanksgiving morning.
