Do they even let the faculty fill out the survey themselves? Given the number of presidents that garnered 100% approval, I wonder how many responses Glassdoor requires to consider the data set valid.

I got a chuckle out of camleish's response above. And a few months ago, a friend of mine who works at a small community college in Texas commented that she couldn't understand why anyone would want to work at BYU. So naturally I am interested in a national poll showing BYU job satisfaction as #1 in the nation.

When I first saw this, I shared some of Babs' skepticism about the size of the poll and the poll methodology. However, there are additional data to back this up. In a recent speech given by the BYU Academic VP, Brett Webb (a friend of mine), some additional data were reported from a study by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA and it included responses from 24,000 faculty members across the US. This study seems to replicate the findings of the Glassdoor study linked by Surfah. You can reference the entire speech here:

In the speech, Webb included data from several surveys directed at BYU students and alumni. A few things here you might find interesting. First of all, a high percentage of BYU grads go on to pursue graduate degrees:

Doesn't shock me a bit. Don't you have to be a Temple Recommend holder to teach at BYU? Can you imagine a Temple Recommend holder speaking evil of the Lord's annointed?

I think it is very intuitive too. I image that for the type of person who wants to be at BYU professionally with all that entails, there is no where else that would make them happier. Nothing wrong with that. It's not a perfect analogy, but I imagine most people living in Vatican City and working for the Catholic church would report very high happiness and satisfaction.

Yes, I can very much imagine someone at BYU responding honestly to each question in a completely anonymous survey on job satisfaction.

They would probably be the most satisfied. If you were non-LDS, why would you teach at BYU unless there was something they offered that you wanted very badly?

I also think it is nice that so many people can find a place they enjoy working for.

Absolutely, that most certainly affects overall job satisfaction. What is more interesting to me is the high ratings relative to very specific features.

I call BS on this one. This is one of those where the student knows what the proper answer should be and answers it that way. Don't say it is anonymous and so why would they. In our culture it is part of our training to answer question the proper way because we know a higher power is watching and it isn't anonymous to him.

And by the way, I think this same dynamic would apply to most faculty. I would assume that most faculty pick a university environment (research vs teaching emphasis, large vs small, etc.) that is aligned with their overall career objectives and personal preferences.
