My kid's elementary figured things out this year. They decided that instead of selling anything as a fundraiser, they are simply letting parents know what they need to raise as a goal and asking us to donate. Done. (Not the whole goal, mind you. But I'll donate - and I don't buy the fundraising crap they sell.)

I don't think my wife has ever turned down a kid knocking on our door for fundraising. We are an easy mark.

My wife is pretty easy too. Just bought cookie dough from a kid in our neighborhood who attends a different school than ours last night (the school boundary is our street).

She does draw the line, though, at those college age kids who come selling magazines. For some reason they think the sales pitch of "buy some magazines so that I can go on a trip to Europe" is going to be effective. Her response is simply - I don't have money to send ME to Europe, what makes you think I want to pay for YOU to go?

A few years back here there was some sort of bust where some college-age kids were actually part of an organized theft ring. The magazine subscription stuff was just a front to allow them to case the homes.

I opened the fridge last night to find a unfamiliar sight....a tub of cookie dough sitting front and center on one of the shelves. It had a sticker on it with the name of one of the PC. I didnt even bother asking my wife how much we paid for that tub, nor how many others were in our house.

Do yourself a favor and never read the label on that stuff.

Apparently it can sit on the shelf for a few weeks before going bad. Keep it in the fridge if you want to make it last a few months. Freezer for longer.

What kind of cookie dough can sit on the shelf for weeks without going bad? Are they sure this isn't just some form of play dough?

bump. New school year... new crappy fundraisers at elementary school. If I knew about these fund raising assemblies pep rallies in advance I'd just as soon keep my kids home for the day (or week). My second grader bit the sales pitch hard. Jeebus help me.

I just got back from watching my young son run 40+ laps in a "fun run" fundraiser. His "sponsors" are going to be paying out the ass given they said they would pay him so much a lap. I have read that the annual school golf tournament for the dad's has raised more than $2 million for the local schools. The way I figure it our kids must be swimming in money and don't need me giving them any more.

My son went around getting donations for a $ amount for every free throw he would make in a FT contest the HS team put on. That was the lowest amount I've ever had to pay for a donation.

I will love the day when I have to complain to Holmoe that we should get Cougar Club benefits because we pay more than they do.

We do the "Jog-a-thon" every year. I always make sure that I give enough per lap that we bring home the 1st and 2nd place prize!

Our neighbor girl comes to our door every year jacking us for lap money. I tell her I don't give a crap about how much you run, I give a crap about your education. Here's a 20, and I'll see you next year. Every year she sends a card that reads "You made a difference in the world today." At least she waves to me when I drive by.

When I became our school foundation president, I inherited a fundraiser that did the pep rally/prize thing. It was awful. Kids crying at school because they didn't earn a plastic frog to put on a lanyard. Parents upset that class instruction time was being wasted on an assembly that was self serving to the company. I agreed with them and put a stop to that. We don't do any fundraisers that require assemblies. No prizes for individuals. We try to earn the bulk of our funds from donations, a carnival, and our auction. We still have to do one selling fundraiser, but we tell parents that if enough of them donate, that can be eliminated. And that fundraiser is just sent home with no pomp and circumstance, no assembly, no prizes to reward kids who do sell.

I feel like towns/schools/communities get nickled and dimed to death with all the fundraisers out there. Has to be a more effective way. Though, I will say we do get complaints from some parents that we aren't selling enough, wah wah, where will I buy my wrapping paper this year? I don't get it, but as much as I hate all the fundraising crap, I'm an easy mark for other kids like JL.

My 1st grader came home from school this week with a speech she had obviously practiced more than once. Complete with a debut of puppy dog eyes. Wonderful.

I think these businesses should be required to declare what percentage actually goes towards the school/program. "Large" just isn't enough detail for me.

The school does do a large carnival like event around Halloween that is a lot of fun for the kids and raises a lot more money than these stupid things. Part of the vent is a big raffle with all kinds of packages to bid on.

A guy in my office had his daughter going around selling pre-made Little Caesars pizzas. They were frozen and all you had to do was throw them in the oven. The problem is they were 3 for $25. I can drive to Little Caesars and buy one hot and ready for $5.
