So, I picked up my dad from the airport today, and while parking, I accidentally scraped a lady's car. She was pretty pissed (even though it was extremely minor) and demanded insurance, my drivers license and my firstborn.

As I'm fishing out my DL, I look at the expiration date and the dang thing has been expired for 3 months! I wonder how long it would have been until I noticed that I was driving illegally. Sheesh. I guess I expected a notice or something form the driver's license division or something. Guess I know where I will be spending my lunch hour (or two) tomorrow.

One of the guys in my office flew back to NY with his son for a little league tournament in Cooperstown. No problem getting on the plane from SLC. They spent a few days in NYC and then went to pick up their rental car to drive up to the tournament. The car agency asked for his driver's license and noticed that it had been expired for over 5 months and refused to rent him a vehicle. He scrambled to get a train to Albany and then contacted one of the other parents to get his son to the games. He then had to call his wife to fly out to meet him so she could rent a car.

Apparently they are no longer sending out mail reminders from the DMV.

I guess it was a blessing in disguise that I hit that lady. Better than a cop pulling me over and being the one to break the news.

Same thing happened to me once on a business trip to Reno. The guy at the rental car desk pointed out that my license was expired and wouldn't rent me a car. I had to get around in a cab for the two days I was there.

I got a notice I needed to renew my UT DL a couple of months before it expired. Now did I renew before it expired? No, but I do have an appointment set up!

Arizona driver licenses don't expire until the driver's 65th birthday...

37) Does my driver license expire at age 60?

No. At one time driver licenses were issued with an expiration date on the driver’s 60th birthday. Then the law changed to extend the expiration date an additional five years to age 65. The computer record for those licenses was automatically updated to reflect the new expiration date.

If you have a license that indicates that it expires at age 60, you may continue to use the license you have. No action on your part is required. However, because it has the old expiration date, it may no longer be viewed as a valid document when you present it as a means of identification.
