Kindle Touch 3G or Nook or ?

So my spouse is interested in a Kindle or Nook or something like that for her birthday:

Neither of us have much exposure to using them.

Is there a cost for using the 3G service? We have good wifi at home? Is 3G even very necessary?

Color or not?

Which brings more value in terms of access and cost to reading material?

We are not too interested in unlocking or loading different OS, etc. Just something easy to use.

Recommendations?

Mrs. Funk and I both have the $79.99 entry level Kindle. I frankly don't miss the touch screen on it. You can turn the pages just as easy with the buttons n the side. Sure the keyboard is a pain, but you rarely use it. I didn't see the need to pay the extra $20.00 for the Kindle Touch.

As for having 3G, you don't pay a cost if you have the 3G model. The 3G is really not necessary. The only benefit to having the 3G is the ability to purchase books if you are away from a WiFi connection. That really doesn't happen that often.

I prefer the design of the Kindle and I prefer dealing with Amazon over dealing with Barnes and Noble. For that reason, I would go with the Kindle over the Nook. IMO, color doesn't matter. If you are looking for a dedicated e-reader device, nothing beats e-ink. I don't think either have a color version with e-ink.

You are going to have about the same amount of content for both the Nook and the Kindle.

ldc reads almost exclusively on the cheaper Kindle like mpfunk mentioned, I was offering to upgrade her to a Fire/Nook/iPad for Xmas and she wasn't interested. If she is just wanting to read books on it I would maybe look at that, if she is wanting a web experience and apps then the Fire is affordable and easy to use. Santa brought it to our boys for Xmas, they have enjoyed it.
