With all the great things that come out of California, and Dayton has a congratulatory threat while California doesn't?

California is unfairly maligned! It gets a bad rap from jealous Utahns and sheltered midwesterners. Free thought is not a bad thing.

For instance, today I ran across this:

An Albino student was not allowed to put on sunscreen during a school outing, because the school district had a rule against sunscreen except with a doctor's note, as sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug.

49 states have a policy prohibiting sunscreen at school except with a doctor's note. The only voice of reason in the entire country?

California. Again, California is the only state that allows public school students to put on sunscreen without a doctor's note.

Yet another example of how stupid the "zero tolerance" idea is that is becoming more and more common. You're not allowed to think, we have to obey the rules as written no matter how stupid it is.

I remember reading a story about some kid getting in trouble because he had a butter knife in with his lunch. It was considered a weapon. (That one probably happened in California.)

We are no longer allowed to just use common sense.

Nope. Happened in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Actually, California is again leading out in this area, as well, as there is a bill before the assembly to relax the "zero tolerance" laws put in place more than a decade ago.

Seriously. At some point rules make themselves obsolete and dangerous. How stupid does a school "nurse" have to be to do something so incredibly stupid like that. I simply cannot fathom adhering to a rule over the safety or well-being of a child in obvious need...rules or no rules. Especially over something as trivial as sunblock.
