  • Hydracodone and unisom, anyone know

    if there is a problem taking those two drugs together. I have googled it and it doesn't seem so, except someone on yahoo answer claims that is how Marylyn Monroe bit the dust. I am sure though she took a lot of them at the same time.

    Anyway the Hydracodone is helping with the pain, but I only got two hours sleep last night. That isn't good for old people.

    drugs.com says you probably shouldn't combine, but of course they will err on the side of caution

      Um, unisom is on the Beers Criteria. You shouldn't be ingesting at your age.

          I don't know what the Beers Criteria is. I will look it up. Does it kill your sex drive?

            There are two kinds of Unisom--one is just Benadryl, one is doxylamine. Both make you drowsy (hence its name), as can hydrocodone. Combining these two could be dangerous if you haven't tried either one, because you could get a little lazy about breathing (like that? ). However, given that hydrocodone isn't doing much to knock you out, you're fine combining them--just be careful. Maybe half the unisom dose?

            A really common side effect of narcotics is itching, caused by histamine release. So we end up giving Benadryl on top of morphine, dilaudid, and yes, hydrocodone, all the time. Just be careful.
            At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

              Not a doc, but I take half dose Unisom (doxylmine succinate--not looking up the spelling) every night. My understanding is that it's not very serious at all, and when you hear of people dying of sleeping pills it's always Ambien or the harder stuff like that, not the kind of stuff that's sold over the counter like Unisom.

                Thanks. Of course the Hydracodone is by prescription. The pain or ache I was having wasn't being stopped by the hydracodone. I also don't itch, or feel a buzz or even know why people get high on these things.

                I can now take two and that seems to help the ache for a couple of hours, but I can't sleep. I was thinking maybe that was due to the hydracodone. I had cortizone shots Friday and that has seemed to help the ache in the back of my knees a bit.

                I got two hours last night and can't believe I am not sleepy. I am going to try a chiropractor one of my friends swears by. I have been to my Doctor, a pain doctor and a back doctor. No one seems to be able to figure it out yet.

                Maybe the old bod is just giving out.

                  Old people need less sleep. It is kind of a super power. Get some reading done.

                    Beers criteria is a list of no-no medicines for geriatric patients because the harms of the medicines outweigh any potential benefit in your age range

                    Many geriatrics take meds on the Beers since we prescribe meds on there routinely to the young and forget that you got old.

                      I just searched the Beers list here http://www.americangeriatrics.org/fi...aCitations.pdf.

                      There were two references to Doxylamine

                      How serious are these?

                      1. Highly anticholinergic;
                      clearance reduced with
                      advanced age, and
                      tolerance develops
                      when used as hypnotic;
                      increased risk of
                      confusion, dry mouth,
                      constipation, and other
                      anticholinergic
                      effects/toxicity.
                      Use of
                      diphenhydramine in
                      special situations such
                      as acute treatment of
                      severe allergic reaction
                      may be appropriate.

                      2. Ability to worsen
                      constipation;
                      agents for urinary
                      incontinence:
                      antimuscarinics
                      overall differ in
                      incidence of
                      constipation;
                      response variable;
                      consider
                      alternative agent
                      if constipation
                      develops.

                        Do you want grandpa to fall or see flying pigs? Common call from nursing home is: "Mr. So and So is swinging his arms and hitting the staff, can we get some Ativan?"

                        Best response is to DC the elavil. The best geriatrician is the one that stops the correct medicines.

                          I am so looking forward to my days in the Nursing home. I hear you can grab the nurses and everyone realizes you just aren't being yourself.

                            I hope you know I'm just joking with you. I have no idea of your age.
