  • 15 things that I learned on a two-week cruise to Hawaii

    1) If you jump off of a cruise ship out in the middle of the ocean, 1000 miles from the nearest land, and a few people are sharp enough to toss out some orange life rings to help mark the spot, it takes about an hour for the cruise shop to come to a stop, turn around, go back, find you, and pick you up.

    2) If you jump off of a cruise ship and are recovered, it will be the last time you are allowed onto a cruise ship. Ever.

    3) A surprisingly large number of frequent cruisers have been on other ships where someone has jumped off, with mixed results in finding them.

    4) Apparently (according to rumor), if the cruise ship doesn't find someone who jumped off, they have to wait until the coast guard shows up, possibly a full day later.

    5) Although I am quite brave about trying new and different types of food, I will NEVER again try anything made from duck liver.

    6) It is easy to rent a car from a cruise ship at any of the ports in Hawaii. The rental companies have shuttles to pick you up and drop you back off. Cost of a car for the day is generally less than the cheapest island tour (for one person).

    7) It's kind of hard to breath at 13,800 feet when you've been spending most of your time at sea level.

    8) Expect to get rained on in Kauai regardless of the weather everywhere else.

    9) For a serious medical emergency, the cruise ship captain WILL turn around and go back to Honolulu if he's not past the point of no return.

    10) Lots of interesting rumors develop when everyone thinks the ship is going east and the sun comes up from behind the ship.

    11) Even over more than four days, it's hard for a ship to make up 15 hours of lost time.

    12) In order to satisfy the rules of the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886, you only need to talk to a Mexican official who comes out on a pilot boat, then sign some papers to comply - you don't need to actually pull into the harbor and tie up at the dock.

    13) San Diego Airport is not really up to handling all of the passengers from several cruise ships unloading on the same day.

    14) Since the cruise ship terminal is so close to the San Diego airport, it is way cheaper to take a taxi than to use the shuttles provided by the cruise ship.

    15) After two weeks on a moving ship, apparently it takes longer than 24 hours before you can take a shower without feeling like things are still moving.

    16) Surfah's roommate does in fact bang a bunch of hot chicks and is raking it in.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I hate cruises. I've been on two, one to Hawaii, the other in the Caribbean. Never again.

this sounds like a wild trip, I'm particularly interested in the medical emergency that made you turn around to go back to Honolulu.

Please tell me you didn't learn all of these by first-hand experience!
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

The one cruise I've been on I spent puking while we kept on cruising away in the middle of the Mediterranean. One would assume sea sickness, but no.

            17. There are flu bugs that pass around cruise ships and I highly recommend NOT exercising in the gym on the ship if you would like to avoid getting such a flu bug. Unless you want to drop 10 pounds in 5 days, as I did.

            18. You can get room service of cups and cups of strawberries, complete with goblets of ginger ale if that is all you can keep down for four days.
what I am is what I am and I does what I does.

Why did you jump off the ship? And was your medical emergency related to that our something else entirely?

                19. The intestinal flu you picked up probably wasn't airborne.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

they said something about the gym equipment being a hotbed of disease.

I just came back from a cruise to Cozumel. I worked out every day and am proud to report no flu-like symptoms.

The guy who jumped off of the ship supposedly had a "bipolar disorder" and was off of his medication.

They wouldn't tell us much more about the medical emergency, other than that after the guy was in the hospital, the doctors there told the ship captain that bringing him back there was the right thing to do, because the ship medical facilities were not sufficient to properly handle whatever problem the guy had.

The only other thing I know about that one is that the guy was huge, and it was difficult for the crew members to get him into the right place on the boat that came out to get him.

There were quite a few huge people on the cruise. They were often the ones taking 15 pieces of bacon and multiple platefuls of food.

I can't help but think this is really a humblebrag thread...

2 weeks is a long time. Was it too long?
