Putting up a new basketball net

I'm replacing a basketball net at a school.

The rim is damaged in that the areas the net goes into on the rim have broken off in several places. (What is that called anyway?)

I tried putting up a net, cutting off pieces of another net and splicing them in and tying around the rim. Didn't work. Fell off pretty quickly.

Any ideas?

That's an idea but it's not mine and I don't know if they'd let me. In fact I think it would cause more trouble to ask. as in someone finds out the gym is being used and stops us.

I think my solution is in more effectively splicing the net material, but I am not an Eagle Scout and paid no attention to rope tying.

Without the little metal net holders I can't think of a way to do it other than cut the net's top loops and tie them over the rim in the places that the rim is missing the holders. Depending on which rim holders are missing the net will hang a little cock-eyed but it will be fine if it a thin nylon net. The net will wear out more quickly this way but as long as you have a thin nylon net and not a thick rope net it should not impact the ball going through too much. Also if the net is nylon you could burn the knot a little bit to melt it together.

Not perfect, but you are not going to get perfect witout buying a new rim.

good idea. I think plastic zip ties would work as well.

If you use zip ties be sure to get the wider ties (about 3/4" wide) to spread out the load a bit. Or just use two or three at each site. Otherwise the hard plastic of the tie will tear through the net in a matter of weeks.

Another option : bend up a piece of piano wire to match the existing net hangers and zip tie that to the rim. Then attach the net to the hanger. This might be a better option because the wire hanger allows the net to slide freely across it, which greatly reduces wear.

Or find a welder who will re-attach some brackets for the rim when no one is looking...

Every good redneck can fix most everything with tie wire and some good ol' Kentucky Chrome! If you don't mind living in a mobile home and drive a 4x4 Chevy 1500 with a deer sticker of some kind, and consider teeth an accessory; you would fit right in here, Santos.
