  • Hardest Sports to Train & Coach

Boom. Love that this person recognizes what is the hardest sport of all..

    WRESTLING!

Note: Although the mention of soccer tends to draw LOTS of criticism.. I mean.. Seriously. Soccer is not hard to train for or coach

I played baseball in high school, and I distinctly remmember going to our winter conditioning sessions and being amazed at how hard the wrestlers trained. Since then, I have always believed that you need to be a little crazy to be a wrestler.

I can't disagree with that list, especially his justification of track.

He forgot to mention the main reason it's so hard to train and coach wrestlers-

First you have to convince them to be in such intimate contact with other males!

As a former track athlete, I think he missed the boat a little.

I think the hardest sport to train for is pole vaulting. There are training poles that allow you to work on form and technique while remaining safe. There comes a point, however, where you have to pick up your competition pole and go. There is a narrow window to work with...of the pole is too stiff you'll get thrown. If it is too soft you might break the pole and end up on your head. Training is very challenging and there is a paucity of good coaches.

I guess bull-riding should be up on the list, too.

Two of my best friends in HS were the wrestling co-captains. Due to injury, there was an opening at my weight class and I was recruited. The wrestling coach was also my English teacher so I felt a lot of pressure. I hated the conditioning and was amazed at how out-of-shape I was compared to the other wrestlers; even after off-season football workouts and playing football the months preceeding wrestling season. I was miserable but stuck with it out of obligation. My salvation arrived when a guy moved into our school from Iowa and had wrestled since he was about 5. He was good; really good. The wrestling team needed a trainer so I was recruited to do that because I was so miserable with the constant conditioning and diet restrictions.

I guess the same could be said about UFC fighters (Which happens to have a majority of them that were former wrestler's..). But I bet you wouldn't make a joke to one of them huh...

The BBall team in my High School tried to give us wrestler's shit about practicing etc.. So we challenged them to switch practices for a day.. They endure a practice of wrestling while we take a break and practice BBall. It was hilarious to see the frustration on the face of the BBall coach as he tried everything he could think of to make us tired.. Even after he pulled out all his tricks it felt like a breeze compared to our usual practice.. Our wrestling coach thought it was a cool idea until he saw our ulterior motive of getting a day off.. So we ended up practicing another 1 1/2 hours after the BBall practice.. Such is a life as a Wrestler. And this does not include the personal training each of us did in the AM on our own.. Hated it everyday, but look back with fond memories of all that I accomplished.. And I even miss the practices now...

Wrestling is the most exhausting sport I've tried. I imagine water polo can't be far behind though.

I have to agree. And is a physical one too. The punches and everything else that goes on under the water makes it even harder..

Actually, I wrestled for a couple of years in junior high. It amazed me how exhausted I'd get when, at least to the casual observer, I wasn't doing much of anything. But I eventually dropped wrestling for something not so exhausting - cross country and track. From my personal experience, I'd much rather train for, say, 5k racing than for wrestling. Partly because I have more talent for the former, but largely because of the training regimen.

Oh, as long as it isn't in person, I just might...
