    Dick Harmon Hall of Fame

We need a dedicated thread for wacky quotes from Dick Harmon. These little gems need to be preserved for posterity.

    From today:

BYU then kind of crashed for a second from distance when Abouo, Matt Carlino and Craig Cusick all missed 3-pointers on the same possession. It was like mining Twinkies out of a veggie stand.

You haven't been paying attention. He has been writing like this his entire career. Best to just enjoy it.

If someone has the direct quote of the Haloti Ngata dance of submission before Gary, please, PLEASE post it.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I'm pretty sure it was Vai Sikahema that wrote about that, not DH.

It can not be referenced without being quoted.

On Sunday, there was no denying the side-by-side weight of these two events on the American psyche. One was sandwiched in between news reports of the other, like slices of pizza hiding a horrific scab.

Not wanting to threadjack but this reminds me of Matt Taibbi's brutally hilarious takedown of Tom Friedman. An alltime great journo beatdown.

Like George W. Bush with his Bushisms, Friedman came up with lines so hilarious you couldn’t make them up even if you were trying—and when you tried to actually picture the “illustrative” figures of speech he offered to explain himself, what you often ended up with was pure physical comedy of the Buster Keaton/Three Stooges school, with whole nations and peoples slipping and falling on the misplaced banana peels of his literary endeavors.

Remember Friedman’s take on Bush’s Iraq policy? “It’s OK to throw out your steering wheel,” he wrote, “as long as you remember you’re driving without one.” Picture that for a minute. Or how about Friedman’s analysis of America’s foreign policy outlook last May: The first rule of holes is when you’re in one, stop digging. When you’re in three, bring a lot of shovels.”

First of all, how can any single person be in three holes at once? Secondly, what the fuck is he talking about? If you’re supposed to stop digging when you’re in one hole, why should you dig more in three? How does that even begin to make sense? It’s stuff like this that makes me wonder if the editors over at the New York Times editorial page spend their afternoons dropping acid or drinking rubbing alcohol. Sending a line like that into print is the journalism equivalent of a security guard at a nuke plant waving a pair of mullahs in explosive vests through the front gate. It should never, ever happen.

Dick has had a lot of doozies lately, which I noticed were highlighted on this message board. This story, however, really is one of his greater hits.

Dick Harmon: Former BYU linebacker Markell Staffieri anxious for 460-mile ride to Boise for Thursday Heroes

Those who are involved with sports so often self-aggrandize themselves and the competitions they're involved in... but for all the problems and ills associated with sports, there in undeniable power in them to make a difference in people's lives. I think this is a fine example.

In 2014, Stewart had worked his way into a backup role to Hill. Still, BYU had no scholarship for him that spring. By June, however, Green made it official and transferred to Weber State. Stewart had decided to accept a $10,000 summer internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers. This is when BYU and the NCAA began looking into improper benefits to some Cougar football players, including Hill. By the end of June, BYU’s coaching staff formally gave Stewart a scholarship for his senior year. He would get the paperwork vacated by Green, now Weber State’s starter.

Boy, did they need him to back up Hill in 2014.

Last Friday when Hill went down, breaking his left leg and shredding ligaments after a tackle in the Utah State game, it all came full circle for both parties.

Boy, does BYU really need Stewart this week.

Interesting how QB soap operas can work out in Provo.
I've never hated Dick Harmon as much as I do now.
