He's right. We may have a significant seating problem.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostNo way are you all going to fit in that restaurant. It is tiny.
I do like falafel's idea of DP Cheesesteaks. Good eats, that. Sorry, I wasn't projecting a crowd when I suggested Slab.
Then again, trying to rearrange a meeting at the 11th hour may be too complicated.Last edited by Mrs. Funk; 11-22-2011, 10:20 AM."You know, I was looking at your shirt and your scarf and I was thinking that if you had leaned over, I could have seen everything." ~Trial Ad Judge

Well, shall we stay the course, and if it's really too crazy to try to fit us all, change venue at that point?"You know, I was looking at your shirt and your scarf and I was thinking that if you had leaned over, I could have seen everything." ~Trial Ad Judge

I just need to know if "gatherin" is being used in the title as a noun or a verb. One one hand, it appears the word is being used as a noun, as you seem to be having a gathering of sorts. However, used as a noun, the truncated suffix is less common in written form, leading me to believe it's merely a typo.
On the other hand, use of the word as a verb is particularly enjoyable. For example "We're a gatherin' for some vittles in Zion". Here, it would not be uncommon at all to truncate the gerund.
HFN, please clarify so I can know whether to fully enjoy this thread title, or, in the alternative, to mock you for your typographical error.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

Since the truncated suffix here is based on the verbal pronunciation, it is really immaterial whether HFN uses the word as a noun or a verb. There would be no distinguishable difference to a listener's ear. Therefore, the part of speech the author intended to use is not important.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI just need to know if "gatherin" is being used in the title as a noun or a verb. On the other hand, if HFN were at all interested in proper grammar, and had intended to use the colloquial verb form you suggest, he should have also placed a hyphen between the "a" and the "gatherin" to from "a-gatherin'." But, if HFN were employing a very "authentic" sort of prose style, he might leave out all punctuation and simply let the listener's ear sort out the sounds, ala Faulkner.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different.
