Today I chucked a grapefruit from the 28th floor into the East River

It was on impulse - I had it, the window was open, I peered out and there was no one on the waterfront so I flung that muther and watched it arc 300 feet and splat w/ a resounding echo on the surface of the water.

    Very satisfying.

Please feel free to make this thread the home for anything you do that you might have also liked when you were 12.

Also (Grace and Triple, for you) feel free to psychologize this into my unmarried status somehow.

I was tempted to throw a coin off the observation deck of the Empire State Building when I was a kid. But then I remembered seeing those old newspaper pics of jumpers that had crushed entire cars below on impact. I decided the risk of killing someone with a coin was too great, so I spat instead. The next thing I remember was my grandmother hitting me softly upside the head, saying "cochino!" I learned my lesson that day.

In one of my areas in Guatemala City we lived on the top floor of a dilapidated "high rise" building. At 6 stories high it was 4 stories taller than any building within 2 miles of it. The rent was super cheap, probably because the water pressure was terrible and there was no elevator. The apartment had its problems, but we had some great times taking food (oranges, eggs, etc.) up onto the roof balcony and throwing them down to a target that we had painted in the street below. We actually had to throw them over a row of houses to reach the street, and a couple of times the grenade slipped out of the thrower's hands only to land with a thunderous bang on a tin roof below.

Reminds me of a time I launched a barrage of avocados at some kids that were Guate-taunting me from the street below from my rooftop apartment. It was a blast, but I'm kinda glad I didn't hit paydirt, in retrospect....

          Ah yes, the missionaries-chucking-stuff-from-their-apartment-balcony thing.

In one area, we would be challenged pretty much nightly by kids in the same complex to some sort of water battle. These kids were ages 10-16 or so and would wait for us to come home for the evening, then they would throw plastic bags filled with water at us as we entered the courtyard. We would then hurry to our apartment which was on the top floor and above all these kids' apartments and bomb them with water-filled bags s well. They got a kick out of it and we did too. One of the elderly residents - a WWII veteran - would watch these battles and finally, after one night of us turning it up a notch, told the kids "never go to war against the Americans. They have more money, better strategy and will use all their resources to destroy the opposition."

In my last area, the apartment was on 7th of 8 floors. It was high enough to see over the buildings across the street which bordered the main square of the city. There were a few citrus trees in the courtyard that supplied us with oranges, lemons and grapefruit. The square was a hangout for a large group of young men who took it upon themselves to intimidate the residents into giving them money each day. They were very aggressive panhandlers who were known to use violence and the authorities weren't too concerned about stopping them. After they had roughed up the other companionship on day, the four of us went out on the balcony and pelted them with citrus fruit. It was amusing to watch them run around and head for cover.

In my first area in Hungary we lived above a bar. The apartment had a small balcony and would catch plenty of snow. There was a lot of snow that winter it we made a fairly regular evening exercise to pelt tipsy drinkers leaving the bar with snowballs. This resulted in a few angry drunken outbursts as the targets turned around looking for us.

If pressed I expect that we wld have defended it as an indirect way of teaching the WoW.

In one apartment in Okinawa, for some reason we would have pancakes for breakfast almost every pday. After suffering through one particularly dense batch, I threw one frisbee-style from the balcony, expecting it to plop down into the acre-size patch of farmland below. Instead, the pancake faded to the right, flew at least 75 yards (we were on the 4th floor, and it was one of the better efforts), and came to rest in the security bars of a neighbor's window. It sat there for over a week before either disintegrating or being discovered by its new owner.

I shld point out that this isn't the first time this has happened. And not the first fruit. Mangoes, oranges and apples have also been sent hurtling to a watery end out that window.

Throwing grapefruits out a window is not going to relieve your stress, Ox. Squeezing grapefruits, however, is a step in the right direction.
