Driving home, stuck in traffic, I saw an airplane 5-6 miles overhead flying west, presumably to Hawaii, Japan, who knows where? I love to travel, and when I see aircraft overhead I often wish I knew where they came from and where they're headed. Well sitting there in my car, I figured out how to satisfy this curiousity.
I represent one of a few companies that provide flight tracking information, where you can see in real-time where a particular aircraft is, where it started, its destination, airspeed, altitude and time of arrival (flytecomm.com). Now my iTouch, and I assume other handhelds, have a gizmo (sorry to get technical) that determines whether you're holding it straight up or on its side, so that that screen can adjust the picture accordingly. I assume that said gizmo, perhaps with a little refinement, can determine the angle, relative to the ground, that the handheld is being held at any given moment. So, with the appropriate software (my killer app), one could point the handheld at the aircraft, and when you hit a button, your handheld device would (a) determine your location, since your future handheld will include a GPS feature, (b) log onto the flight tracking website, (c) given your location, determine the only commercial flight that could be on the angle at which you're holding your handheld, and (d) show you all of the data available about the flight. Curiosity satisfied, and travel envy can commence.
My wife tells me the market for this may be limited to only a few travel voyeurs like me, but still. Series A funds are not being accepted.
