Unfortunately Utah seems incapable of separating itself from ASU.

As opposed to the Shanghai College rankings, you should check out the rankings from the University of Hanoi where Utah seems to have eclipsed ASU. Unfortunately, it looks like Utah is jostling with a different competitor in those rankings: UNLV.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Is the US that dominant in higher education? The vast majority of top school are in the US. For some reason I would have thought more European or Japanese universities would be vying for a higher spots. Go America!

It appears byu is in a good position sandwiched between the mighty Aggies of China Agricultural and the Mighty Fightin' Zionists of Ben Gurion at Negev ('where the desert blooms like a rose').

Japan has 21 listed, with 5 in the top 10. There is an abundance of universities in the USA. England has Oxford and Cambridge in the top 10, plus 8 others in the top 100.

If you look at the collective rankings coming out the Universities of Shanghai, Ulan Bataar, Vladiovostok, Pyongyang and Turkmenistan, BYU is doing waaaaay better than you claim.

You mean 5 in the top 100? Because the first japanese school to show up on that list is Tokyo at 21.

You are correct. Things like Nobel Prize winners, Fields Medal winners, getting professors published in prestigious journals, and having students and faculty become distinguished researchers is FAR less important than the SAT scores of incoming Freshmen, percentage of students who commute, and how Ivy League department heads' secretaries "feel" about a certain school on a questionnaire (USNWR ranking protocol).

Judging by the written content on Shanghai college's website, I'm wondering if ASU and Utah are distinguished in Engrish scholarship and that's how they got their rankings.

Btw, I looked into the Nobel prize winners that are associated with the U. There are three of them. One actually earned the prize while working for the U. One worked for the U for a few years then moved onto bigger and better things and earned his Nobel prize a decade later. For the third, I have no idea what his relationship with Utah is. Maybe he lectured at Utah one time and Utah's been gravy training off of him ever since.

Despite these men's achievements, I don't think they alone can make a silk purse out of sow's ear. Additionally, they have been unable to turn the U into any more of a destination for academic talent coming out of high school than the University of South Carolina.

Per this, the U is ranked 51-75 in the world in the subjects of math, chemistry, physical sciences, computer science, and business/economics, and 76-100 in Engineering. All are 'numbers' fields, and math is a universal language.

FWIW, your Provo Normal University is also ranked 51-75 in Econ/Business which is laudable.
