    Buying a Jeep

Made a deal with a guy on Wrangler TJ today. Have a 3rd driver in the family now so I figured if I had to buy another vehicle and pay for her insurance it might as well be something I can have some fun with too.

First stop will be AF canyon. But I will try to get to Moab sometime in the Fall as well.

Let me know where you go in AF Canyon. I've been wanting to take my Touareg somewhere fun.

Isn't that one of those lower ground clearance crossovers? I don't think we are talking about the same thing.

Mineral Basin and Forest Lake are both great trails.

The Touareg might have a tough time on either of those trails and honestly you will probably regret attempting it. The Touareg is a good vehicle for what it was designed for... but that really doesn't include high clearance rock obstacles, or deeper mud.

            Thats what I'm talking about!

Plan on heading up there as soon as I get it. It's a stock jeep so even Mineral Basin could be a bit much for it as of now. I wanted stock and had to look a bit to find one so if/when I lift it, etc. I'll know it's been done right.

Plus I'd like my daughter to have some time under her belt driving it before it's lifted (i.e. easier to roll).

I won't be doing any crawling in my Touareg, but it will certainly go anywhere a stock Jeep will go. I've got an adjustable suspension, low range gearing, as well as rear and center differential locks.

Just from looking at the pic, it seems like a stock Wrangler has a lot more ground clearance. Not to mention the shorter wheelbase.

Why would you want to take your car to get it all scratched up?

                        I don't agree.

You would be able to work/force it through... but it wouldn't be worth it.

                        *edit

There are many other factors beyond the reasons you listed above that should be considered also...

I'd be willing to watch if you wanted to give it a try.

I have a healthy tow strap, a hi-lift jack, and a big winch with a couple of snatch blocks... we could get ya through.

Do you have anywhere to hook them on your car?

kccougar I've been messin' with ya.

Mineral Basin and Forest Lake are not hard trails. They have a couple sections where you can take harder lines and make it more challenging, but most of it is pretty easy.

I don't know what your wheelin' experience is... I have been off road with an older Touareg before and it did ok, but we weren't pushing it through anything difficult.

Maybe they've modified the new ones substantially, but the one I was with really couldn't compete with a Jeep in the rough.

That's not an insult, they are good vehicles. IMO they are just far more suited for smooth, comfortable, utility than for rugged, dirty climbing and digging.

They are very heavy and technology dependant... that's not good for long off road. Heavy breaks things that aren't built strong, and technology (traction controls) don't work as well as mechanical lockers and solid axles with a heavy foot, when it gets tough.
