I installed a Filtete 3M-50 thermostat this summer.

The cool thing about this product is that it has wifi and you can control it from your iPhone. Android might be supported as well, I don't know. You can also set a program for it from a web page on a cloud server. Real nice and easy.

There have been many times I have left the house with forgetting to turn down the thermostat. I just pull out the iPhone and hit the away button. It sets the thermostat to 85. When I am almost back home I hit the button again and it sets the thermostat back to where it was.

You can pick these thermostats up at home depot for just under $100. I got one off ebay for $60.

If you don't care what it costs then get the Nest... Very cool looking and it has the iPhone app interface as well. This baby with set you back $250, however. I believe Lowes has them.

Anybody else have these app interface thermostats? My wife wants to get one for when we go away for a long time and set the air to 82F. She wants the house back down to 64F before we get home and this would let her be able to do that. We go away from here about twice a month, so this is a common thing. We're also usually gone all summer.

we have a nest. it is very convenient and has already paid for itself several times over. when we leave town, we turn it off and it will keep the house above 40. i don't see any reason to cool it while away, but you can set an upper limit too. it also uses your phone location to set more efficient temps while you're not home temporarily.

Dang that is cold, Bro. My wife likes the temp 72F and that is cool for me. I prefer temp around 74F or so. Of course, I don't wear a lot of clothes and would just lay around the house in my underwear if I had my way.

The app has a "set away" option that will automatically turn all your thermostats up (or down depending if you are in cool or heat mode). On your way home you can just cancel the "away" mode it and will resume back where you had the thermostat set previously.

I was about to buy a nest, but Nevada Energy gave us a free e-thermostats for each of our three a/c units, provided we linked them up to our wireless and let them monitor our usage and "recommend" adjustments for the first year. I know UT and other tin-foil hatters wouldn't go for this, but it has been great and has saved us a lot of money and headache.

You let the government into your thermostats? You might as well just leave front door unlocked and let them walk right in. They are most likely listening to everything you say right now.

So can they make adjustments to your thermostats if the local grid is close to being over tapped? i.e., to prevent rolling blackouts? I have heard of power companies doing this.

Yes. They don't happen often, and you can manually override them if you choose. It hasn't been an issue at all. Last summer our electric bill was down almost 30% over the summer prior.

Nice... those Russian hackers can figure out the best time to rob your house.

My coworker did took Nevada Energy up on this and was constantly finding his thermostats set at 80 during the summer. Especially in the middle of the night. He finally got sick of sweating and switched to something else.

We have Ecobee3s. They work great. They also have sensors that you can put in far reaching rooms that keep the house balanced. Or turn down if there hasn't been activity in that room for awhile.

Did he set up his calendar on the app? I had some problems with it over adjusting the first week, but once I set up the daily calendar on the app, it stopped doing it. Also that doesn't make sense, because 9pm to 6am is when the grid is the least-used, so it's cheapest to keep the house cool during that time. IOW, that's not the time when NVE is trying to get people to lessen their tap on the grid.

Our house is 64F-ish year round. Duke Energy sends us those "Energy audit" things in mail every 2-3 months, and ours is always next to nothing in the winter, even compared to "Efficient Homes" and in the summer, we are well above the "average house" levels. However, since we usually leave for all of June, July, and half of August, it doesn't matter.
