  • What the Hell Was That?

Bare with me everyone. I am totally serious and seek your input if you know what is going on and/or if it is something serious.

Recently, I have had something weird happen to me while I am sleeping. It has been happening more often, so I am a bit worried as to what it is.

This is what happened last night and what has been happening over the last few months. I will be sleeping, peacefully, then all of a sudden I am wide awake and my heart is beating fast. What wakes me up is a loud BOOM! as though someone has slammed the bedroom door. However, it is not an external sound, it is something internal because it never has woken UD up.

From what I can deduce, something internally is making that noise, which startles me awake, causing a rapid heart rate. I have not figured out any type of pattern with it, now it just seems like a random event.

I wonder if something is wrong with my heart? Or maybe sleep apnea? Have any of you experienced this or know what I am talking about? TIA.

What you are describing is called gas. UtahDan needs to fire up the beano at bedtime.

Are you tired all day? I know you've got small kids, so you're probably always feeling tired, but have you felt even more tired than normal? That would probably point to sleep apnea.

Something similar happens to me somewhat frequently (some months 1x/wk, at least once every few months). Except for me it's the sound of somebody either trying the front door or ringing the doorbell. For years I was certain it was really happening, but as I am the only one in the house who ever hears it I've concluded it's me. I think it's just waking from a nightmare (a 3am door try/doorbell ring is anxiety inducing for me as the family "protector") and thus the increased HR.

I have sleep apnea. I'd ask your physician about it; s/he can do a differential diagnosis and see if you need further testing, but I'd be surprised if you had apnea. Before I got a VPAP machine, I would wake up with a pounding heart, but it was usually a dreamless sleep. The BOOM sounds like a dream to me. Buena suerte.

UD may have already suggested this, but do you think you might be crazy?

I think it's God's way of punishing you for chosing the moniker SuperGabers.

J/K. In high school I used to wake up with a pounding, beating heart a lot. Probably a nightmare/dream you don't remember and the "BANG" is illusory...its root is in something else that is occurring in your body and your brain interprets it as a door closing.

You don't think it was a dream? I woke up startled, heart pounding last night when I "heard" a loud, "MOM!" All of my children were sound asleep.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Once or twice a month I will be jolted awake because someone yells my name right in my ear, except it isn't really happening. I would guess it's a dream as well.

This has happened to me since my mission. Not often, but there are times where right at that moment when I fall asleep it sounds like something will shut and wake me up. Door, window, something along those lines. I started experiencing sleep paralysis on my mission as well, so maybe they are connected? I don't know.

                          I appreciate this thread.

It makes me very grateful that I am a sound sleeper.

But I will add my only three experiences that I remember dealing with "waking up bad".

                          1) When I was a teenager and stayed out late, my dad used to like to wake me up on Saturday and Sunday mornings early by grabbing the baseboard of my bed and shaking it. One night, I woke to my bed shaking. But it was pitch black and the middle of the night. Scared the shit out of me. My metal blinds were also shaking. A ball fell off a shelf above my head and hit me. Since I was coming out of sleep and it a daze, it took me a second to go from being terrified to realizing we were having an earthquake.

                          2) Shortly after having our first son, I had a lucid dream where I believed he was in bed with us and was suffocating. I actually woke up my wife digging through the sheets and pillows looking for his head. I believed I had found his body but couldn't find his head. I perceived a pillow to be a body without a head. Very weird.

                          3) While living in an apartment, we had a small master bedroom that had a closet door nearly directly to the right side of our bed. I slept on the right side. One night I had a very lucid dream that someone/thing opened the door of our closet and was coming for us. I shot straight up out of bed and grabbed the lamp next to our bed and angrily asked it/him/her WTF they were doing ...my wife was startled, obviously, and awoke to find me with the lamp in my hands, ready to swing, staring at the open closet door. As soon as the cloud of sleep had passed, it was pretty funny and a bit embarrassing.

Nice. I've been waiting for this -- the set up was too good.

Seriously, Gabers, it doesn't sound like anything to worry about -- certainly doesn't sound like anything heart-related to me.
